Phil,
now that IS an impressive looking flash...and the lens also looks well equiped!
Let us know how it handles? Looks great for 'tinkering' with... ;)

I think it is not a flash. It is an exposure meter to measure the light.
This camera is a classic piece of workmanship.

Sorry Andy, I think forward is right here, that looks like a CDS light meter (photo resistor type) to me.
Phil, I'd check the meter for accuracy, I seem to recall they can fail or drift a bit as they age. May not be a problem but worth a check.

No need to apologise Tim!
Ignorance is bliss, as they say, but if you don't open your mouth now and then, you can never learn... :D
I have never used such a camera; my SRT101 had TTLmetering, so I never got to play with such impressive-looking features!

It looks like it's a Ricoh 500 (Five-One-Nine and 519 have faster f/1.9 lens with larger, not so deeply recessed front element). There were also other variations with f/2.8 lens, but 500 it is most likely.
On top it has selenium light meter (CdS cells are small and don't need light diffuser in front).

This is my Ricoh Five One Nine 1:1.9 / 45

I have the Lens Hood that holds a series VI filter, wide & tele lens, meter & self timer.
They are well built from metal & heavy. No wonder they have lasted so well from 1958.
All selenium meters have an adjusting screw in the bottom. If they work good. If not, there dead for good.

I have a few other vintage Ricohs. a Ricoh "35" with a very quiet shutter

And a Ricoh 500. Very much like the 519, but without the f1.9

Because they are so well made, that have lasted almost 60 years
