Vienna Woods - B&W And Now In Colour!

Wiener

Active Member
A few from a walk yesterday morning. It was a really dark, dank day and the light was so poor that high ISO was used...hence the b&w. When I get a moment I will post a few of the colour ones as I don't think that the grain detracts much from these images...surprisingly!
Any thoughts on the ISO 800 shot on this set? It has aquired some strange shimmers in post-processing methinks! :?

Re: Vienna Woods - B&W

Cant see the shimmers, but am enjoying the images Andy.
Very nice, forest & fog mix so well.

Re: Vienna Woods - B&W

I as well can not see shimmers. I like the mystical atmosphere, you could catch with these shots, Andy.

Cheers,
JONIE.

Re: Vienna Woods - B&W

B&W is a right choice for these shots. #1 wins for me having the best readable fog thanks to the dark foreground.
No shimmers noticed here also, rather an inconsistent loss of detail in the bark of the distant lying cut (spruce?) wood.

Thanks, all comments appreciated! I think #1 is my favourite also. It does seem to leave much to the imagination; I am not sure if I don't find it threating in some way though with so much uncertainty as to what lurks waiting behind the mist...

Any thoughts now on whether colour of b&w is best? :)
Andy

Hi Andy,
I'm normally a big fan of black and white. So no wonder that I like the black and white series...BUT ... the first color photo is perhaps the most beautiful "forest-photo" I've ever seen. Its really fantastic!!!
(And the other photos are also very good)

It may just be me, but I like the B&W images of fog.
The colour ones are good to Andy. With their muted hues.
Maybe I just interpret fog in shades of gray.
Nice photo's, all of em. Even if a little creepy or scarey.

Beautifully hauntingly magical. I love the b/w, but also see great merit in colour........especially #1

I agree with Genster that the 1st color photo is really beautiful, and is my favorite of the series. However, with regard to the remainder of the pics, I like the rendering of the B&Ws the best. Ken

Thank you everyone for your kind comments! The first in colour and the first in black and white are my favourites. In some ways I wish I had had my GXR with me that morning, although the GRDIII, wide open, did not such a bad job. Also the large DOF probably made the photos possible in a way the GXR would have struggled to do, unless I had used a very high ISO indeed...
To be honest, I started off thinking b&w mostly because I thought the high(er) ISO would have rendered the colour shots too grainy, but in the end, the results are very acceptable.
Cheers!
Andy

Artistically I think I like #4 colour the best. While very very subtle colour, that is part of the charm.
Good seeing Andy!

Andy,

Excellent set of images, I think I slightly favour the colour images, as i get the 'autumn' feel to them, over the B&W's.

Of course there is always sepia :)
