Hi Richard,
great to see another post from your new GXR combination!
How is the learning curve going?

Hi Andy,

Well there is a bit of a curve but I'm sure familiarity with the GRD4 menus is helping quite a bit. I've set-up function 1 with focus assist (mode1) and function 2 with AF/MF. My thumb has stopped hitting the macro button when it wants replay. I like the direct button which is a great feature that the GRD4 does not have. So far I've been impressed with the AF but when it doesn't lock because of the lack of contrast, MF & FA & the focus wheel seem to be effective. The other thing I'm noticing is that setting the EV takes a bit of guessing as the LCD and end results don't match too well and if I was working just on the LCD appearance I'd be over exposing. I also need to trust the greater dynamic range of the larger sensor as areas that look under exposed on the LCD look OK when down loaded. I really like the lens and I'm enjoying '50 mm' again after a few years of just 28 mm.

I've gone for a wrist strap from Footprint as I don't really like neck straps and have a good quality but not Ricoh spare battery inbound. So it's nearly all good and even the 'free' SC55L case seems worth while as I'm carrying it in that using the Ricoh supplied camera strap. Anyway, my wrist strap with stitching to match the thin red line on the lens:

You know Richard, It may be a while before you go back to the GRD. In fact i bet you are wondering what the A12 28mm would be like :D
And thanks for putting up the picture of the wrist strap. I've been looking for a good UK based leather one.

I am still using wrist straps up to a certain size camera. The OM-D still has a wristy but could use a neck strap from time to time.
I think the GXR is a wrist strap camera for me.

Like the image, it seems we are having a bit of a minimalist theme on the forum at the moment. :D

Congratulations Richard on your newly acquired GXR. I have one with the A-12 M-mount attachment and love it. Since my main camera is an M Monochrom I had nothing to shoot color with which prompted me to look into alternatives that I could use all my Leica glass on.
After borrowing a GXR from my local camera store for a weekend, I was sold. Better files, nicer color and much more versatile than a Leica M8 (my original choice as a second body for color).
The EVF takes a little getting use to but I feel this is one of the best non Leica M-mount lens alternative out there, hands down.
I am borrowing a Canon FD to M mount adapter this weekend and plan on doing some bird photography with a Canon 500mm f/4.5 L lens :D
Congrats once again and nice shot by the way.

Cheers,

John

Thanks guys for all the comments & encouragement (not that I need a lot). Tim was reading my mind with his minimalist comment - at this time of year the fields around here are either brown or green with the winter wheat shoots and quite mono-colour. Here is another to illustrate the point.

The new wrist strap is quite stiff at the moment but very well made and of a heavier weight that the ST-2 on the GRD4. The seller on operates on eBay but has a wide range of colours available - he's fast to dispatch (and slow to leave feedback). Here is a link to the one I bought:

Wrist strap looks great!
On the topic of correct exposure, are you using RAW or JPEG? I have experienced problems in the past with the LCD showing a well exposed (JPEG) image whilst the RAW file looks over exposed.
Learning to live with it though! ;)
