These sets of presets were designed to bring soul into your B&W work. They were developed with the GRD and GXR in mind. They work with other cameras of course but the Ricoh's have built in soul. Now the mojo will activate your images.
Here's a link to the website and either Olivier or myself are at your service for any questions.

Thanks, Don

Hi Don, these presets look great! One question though - I already have LR4, but would you recommend Silver Efex over LR4 for B&W? :)

I'm doing a lot of b&w work (as a hobbyist) and for me Silver Effex is a huge time saver. In my opinion its strength is in the presets it comes with (plus the ones you may download from the web - thank you, don). In LR4 you can achieve more or less anything you can do with Silver Effex (except for some fancy borders), but for me it just works faster in the latter. I'm eager to hear other peoples opinions.

This is the $64,000.00 question. A month ago I would have a different answer. Nik Silver Efex is a great product and I have been using it since it came out. Because of that, I never really used LR, any version, for anything other than a catalog. I never realized the potential LR had for B&W conversions.

As I said, a month ago but that was then and this is now. I spent many hours in many sessions and at last I discovered the power of LR. It does things I always hoped it would but never took the time to really try out.

They both have their strong points as well as weaknesses but there is always compromise in anything in life.
The most important difference that can't be overlooked is....... Silver Efex has wonders in it and processes great and when you apply the formula, you get a great satisfaction in the image.
LR4 does the same things in a different way but....and this is crucial!.....LR has HISTORY after you close the image. With LR, you can open the image at anytime in the future and start from where you left off, revert back in history or start new without affecting the image. Nik can't do this. It is the single reason I went to LR for the conversion.

I can't choose a favorite because it would be a jaded decision as I have both. If I knew then what I know now and will continue to learn, I would be in LR only. I think this answers the question in a fair way.
There is a reason there are more presets in the LR set, it's because there could be.

Don, any hope to have in the future something also for Aperture III?

Gab, yes in the future something will happen.

Shhhhhh Ricoh wants these installed in the GRD5 but they ain't talking yet...

hi don,

I have an old version of LR, i don't think it's gonna work on mine.
In the picture of the guy flying over the stairs i noticed a nice grain, even with iso speed 80.
can you give a tip on how you create this grain in lightroom?
I hope it's possible in LR2

One more question :) when using the presets, is it better to shoot in color then use the preset? Does the preset turn the photo to b&w? Or do I shoot in b&w?

If you shoot in RAW, it does not matter what you use. If you do JPG, shoot in color, the presets will convert it for you into BW.
The Lightroom presets are out btw!

I've been using Nik less because of this too. I tend to do quick one-offs in Nik but will spend more time in LR working on a LR-only image because I know I can always resume where I leave off.

While Nik is great, the way it is designed as an external editor rather than a native cohort means it will always lack this capability.

I'm not "there" yet in terms of being totally happy with LR-only B+W conversions but am working on it.

Hey frglme, that's terrific!

Thanks guys. I never really gave LR a chance for conversions. I was stupid because I came to it when it was in Alpha. In Bet it was interesting but I never thought it would be what it is today or will be in the future.
Nik came around and swept me off my feet. When I landed I realized that as good as Nik is, it has a few unforgivable issues. As mentioned above, History is the main concern.

So I soon found out that what I love in my images from Nik would be almost impossible to duplicate in LR.
Realizing that my work would now have to be in LR got me onto this journey.
I made the Presets because any LR user will need to have a good starting point. I have more being developed and the idea is that the based are covered.

It will happen...

You guys are kicking out some dynamite work.
Soon Olivier will have more images on his site...

Thanks again and .... if you have any request, let me know....

I'm only too happy to support your efforts Don - it feels much better than the $ I've sent to Nik in the past.

Paypal sent.
