Sri Lankan Cultural Show

Paul Jenkin

New Member
Taken at the Culture Show in Kandy during our holiday in Sri Lanka a few weeks ago. For me, the fire eater and fire walker were the most impressive but the dancers and their costumes were also very colourful. Not sure how to add EXIF data but these were taken on Nikon D700 without flash at ISO 3200.

Hi Paul,
I'd say you'd have had your work cut out for you looking though the images.
Not a lot of light and you probably had a bit of distance between subject and lens.
All considering you did quite well.
Looks like an exotic destination!

Paul, the images are all very beautiful but I personally think that the first is super. I like the colors but in particular the sense of movement you have been able to capture... one second before or after and these could have been very different. Thank you to share.

Thanks guys.

The first image was taken using stage lights only. I hate flash. Nothing kills "feel" more effectively. Personally, I'd rather have a bit of movement blur using available light than pin sharp using "obvious" flash. I have a few shots wither side of this shot and they are very different. I knew they would get together in a clump sooner or later, so I just bided my time. The D700 is about as quick as a film camera when it comes to shutter lag, so no problems there.

The second and third shots were taken in almost darkness used by the performers to emphasise the glowing embers of the coals they were walking barefoot upon and to enhance the brightness / intensity of the flames they were eating. I wish I'd got a D3s as that's about the only camera that can cope better with low light when it comes to noise at high ISOs.

All shots taken with Nikkor 24-120mm lens (non-VR version).

Paul. If you asked me to pick a fave......I honestly couldn't. No1 has great colour and sense of movement, no3 has drama. No2 though may just nick it. I like the muted tones gatecrashed by the brighness of the lamp and smouldering embers. Lovely job done on this.
