Songkran is actually celebration of New Year in Thailand. Washing all bad things away with water. Lots of it.
It lasts for 3 days, well, sometimes bit longer.
Me, as a stranger, see 3 parts of it. As on pictures above, this is about lots of water being poured on people. Small, big, old and young - all splash water and is being splashed. In addition, there is also lots of powder used to mark cheeks (if you are allergic to Johnsons Baby Powder, then you are in biiiiig trouble). In cities and villages there are parades organized. Sometimes whole streets are cover with foam so people can play a lot there (this one unfortunatelly I`ve missed). Second part is much more private. You could see it on my topic "Blessing". Young people wash forehead and feet of the elders with water and flowers, elders give blessing to young ones.
And last part - it is about drinking. I have not seen such amount of people, drinking from morning till, ekhm, morning. Local whisky with sparkling water and ice. Looots of it. And then, all the kisses and hugs on the streets... Doesn`t matter if you are local or a stranger :) Tons of fun!
If you have a chance - go for it.

ps. if anyone from Thailand reads this - please do not hesitate to leave the comment. I`m just falang, do not know lot about Thai culture :)

ps2. of course would make more sense to have all this in one post - but Blessing was as separate story, and I had to wait till all the films are developed and scanned. GR is great, but waterproof gear for Songkran is a must.

Another reason I think it is high time for a serious weather-resistant large-sensor compact. A weather-resistant GR would be ideal for me, and I hope Ricoh-Pentax will be the first to market such a camera. Anyone looking for best IQ in a portable and any-environment camera will want one. Sorry for mentioning this again, but who knows? Maybe someone out there is listening...

Thanks for the description of the holiday.
