Settings - Focus / FN1 and FN2

Sometimes I use Full Press Snap, sometimes not. In order to get sharp photos always, I disabled Full Press Snap, set FN1 to AF/Snap, and set FN2 to SnapFocusDistance. The idea is that when I need Snap, I press FN1; when I'm back to normal shooting, I'd press FN1 again to return to AF. Here's what's confusing: the focus scale on left is always visible indicating MF, although AF works; and pressing FN1 doesn't seem to have any effect. What am I doing wrong?
cheers,

Hi John,

This sounds like a FW bug. I remember a similar issue with GXR. What does happen if you manually switch between then focus modes? I mean switching between AF/Snap or Manual using for example ADJ menu and not the FN buttons? Does the focus scale remains visible in AF mode?

The best you can do is to report your issue to Ricoh via this form:

I've just tried this with my GXR on the FN1 button and it works as you would expect - no distance scale with AF, one press of FN1 goes to snap with the scale then one press again back to snap with no scale. So perhaps it is a FW issue as Pavel suggests?

I have my Gr set the same way, mine works fine. When in AF mode no distance scale, when in snap the distance scale turns on. What is your firmware version? 1.11?

It was my mistake, note the camera's. I set the focus to M, so it stayed in M when toggling FN1. When I changed the focus to Spot AF, I was able to toggle. Sorry for the question...

John,

It was a valid question - there are so many options with the GRD, GXR & GR (not that I have one - yet) it is quite easy to set-up a 'conflict' without realising it then suspecting a camera issue (normal user paranoia) - so it's good to have the discussion.

Ah yes, this inability to switch from Manual to Snap using the FN button (if set to Snap/AF), got me few times as well.

I think it would be better (but maybe not systematical) if the FN buttons would override the actual camera setting? So even if the camera is actually set to Manual, pressing the FN button with assigned Snap/AF would switch the current Manual focus mode to Snap focus. And next press of the FN button would switch Snap to AF.

You're right - so many options, settings that may or may not be over-ridden... There are not that many options I need or use. It's just setting it up right. It's a wonderful camera, once I finally get the hang of it - small, well made, excellent IQ. It does take a while to become familiar with it, though. I find these forums very helpful.

Cheers,

John

I also found that setting FN1 to AF/SNAP was a little limiting because it only works when you are in AF. Doesn't work in MF or macro (which is still an AF mode). It should be "toggle SNAP", and it should work no matter what focus mode you are in.
