Samsung trying to go after Ricoh?

With the latest Samsung cameras, you would have to wonder if they're modeling the nx's for certain brands they're trying to go after. I have noticed that more and more companies are making EVF's for their compacts and making better menu systems etc.

I worry that for the price range, Samsung is going to over-take the market in compacts eventually.

I doubt you have anything to worry about. As long as they keep making these EVF cameras in the shape of DSLRs, then things like the Ricoh and the Leica X1 will do ok.

yes...mostly they are looking like SLR's, perhaps with the exception of the the NX100 with optional EVF .

if samsung does take the compact market, then it must take the best image ? but due to taste being different (what the individual's eye sees) i believe difference to be impossible to corner .

:)

Ricoh (as well Leica) has very narrow niche. I don't think Samsung is after Ricoh rather they are trying create place from themselvels in the new market segment created by m4/3 and NEX mirrorless gadgets

Personally I think the Ricoh GXR is probably the best solution around at the current time, the red dot's are too expensive. You can get the 50mm and 28mm for like around $1800 with the body? maybe the viewfinder as well depending where you get the items from.

Not really

I have a Samsung EX1 - nice camera, like the flip lcd, fast lens, solid construction. Wide angle lens distortion is quite obvious. Although very nice camera it is as simple as the current Ricoh series are complex. You are not necessaily going to say goodbye to Ricoh by owning an EX1.

I also have a NX10. Many have gone into fruit loops over adding old manual lenses to m4/3 and NEX cameras but I would venture that the NX10 has to be a just about perfect horse to attach just about any old manual lens you can name. The mini-dslr look is ideal in balance to fit the old lenses which are smaller than modern equivalents. Even a 200mm f2.8 on FD mount feels great. The built in evf is a natural to use in this concept. Those cameras with an add-on evf have problems to my way of thinking for anything other that compact wide lenses.

The NX10 is solid and nuggety feeling and after holding one with (say) a red ring 50mm f1.2L on board you might hardly want to put it down again - quite addictive like Ricoh cameras also are. But so far removed from the concept of the GXR that there is no contest really.

The NX100? Have not tried one, but the firmware support on any Samsung is pretty basic and there are no custom modes. The more "plastic" basic NX100 is singing to a different class of consumer to the NX10 and EX1 and way way different to the GXR. So Ricoh should not worry on Samsung's part. They are making solid rugged no-nonsense cameras. Lots of fun but not on Ricoh's patch in my mind.

I agree with Sagar's approach here. I think also that within Japan, Ricoh enjoys a following and this is a market that they focus on in a big way. We are just fortunate that they include us along on the ride!

I also agree - I don't think Samsung and Ricoh overlap much at all - I thought I might just chip in as an owner of a GRDIII, GXR, NX10 and EX1. All focussed cameras but focussed on different things and not (at least currently) rivals in the exact same market. Ricoh has cleverly managed to find it's own unique market slots in the past.

i am a liitle confused by this Tom, i think perhaps you underate the NX100, from reviews i have seen the NX100 compact has better image quality to the older Ex1 compact, it (NX100) has same 'large' sensor as the SLR style Nx10, and so again from reviews... are equals in image quality .

:)

Tom,

I have read many praises about the NX10, but it shares the same sensor that the K-7 uses? There have been complaints about high iso noise which were addressed with the K-5 having a different sensor.

I would like to see samsung update the sensor if this is the case, but the nx11 is basically the same thing with a few modifications.

Ricoh may be targeting a specific audience, but one has to think about price in these economic times. Personally a metal body appeals more to me, but if I can save $300-400 I may go with the other camera in that case. It depends on your needs, I like the GXR a lot so far.
