Ricoh 500G, GX, ME, ...

I used one of the Ricoh 500 series when I was in high school some 20 years ago. My niece has a 500GX I think, its in good condition. Optically they were quite well regarded.

Hi Tim,

Well, I'm toying with the idea to get one for myself and test it against GRDII+GT1 ;) I always wanted a rangefinder and 40mm is my favorite focal length. And these Ricoh rangefinders seem to be very reasonable priced.

Actually, I just won an auction for an automatic Ricoh 800EES in very nice visual shape, but according to the seller, it's probably not working. But I know an old-school camera repairer so maybe he can fix it? If nothing esle, I will have a very nice and classy paper weight... :D

It's another from wide range of Ricoh rangefinders based on the same "35/500" body and lens. This one automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture. Focusing is manual. What's interesting, that this automatic version can use wider range of shutter speeds form 4secs to 1/800 sec while the 500G (and other fully manual Ricoh rangefinders) can do only 1/8 - 1/500sec. So this 800ees seems to be much more suitable for daylight shooting. I will let you know when the camera arrives and my opinion about it. I really wish Ricoh could build something like that around at least 4/3 sensor. That would be reeeeally big thing! I won't even mind if it would be fully manual camera without AF (like M8 or RD1).

I was thinking about the same thing Pavel when I got a 500G this weekend. I would love to see something similar from Ricoh with the current technology.

Sometimes it is not so hard to repair these cameras at home, and these small rangefinders are very similar to each other (I have a Chinon EE which looks like a black twin of the EES). Try Google... or post a question at rangefinderforum.com. Or, maybe you are lucky and the camera just needs a new battery and/or battery contact cleaning...

Good luck, Martin
