Hi folks, thanks for the forum. It already has answered one question I had. I had been using the GRd-ii for a few days, and got to a bright sunny day and I was looking for aperture f11. Couldn't find it. But I found a thread about it here.
So, normally in the studio and on locations where I can take a whole lotta stuff, I shoot Mamiya MF. My smaller kit is Pentax, either a K20D digital or ME Super film. And sometimes I cart around a Zeiss Icon folder for film fun. However, I was getting increasingly annoyed when out hiking or biking, and I wanted to take a quick shot. I would have to get off the bicycle, take off my backpack, and get out the gear. Sometimes you just find a situation where you want an immediate pic, so I had been looking at all the options that other photog friends have told me about, you know, Canon G10, Panny LX3/Leica, Sigma, and the new Olympus Pen thing. I went and looked at the new Olympus, but I would have had to buy the 17mm lens separate, because I like wide. And that would have been around $1000. So I finally settled on this Ricoh. It was the smallest of the lot, so I just throw it in my back pocket and go out cycling.
Speaking of that, I do have a question that I may as well just ask here. Are the lcd screens on these easily scraped, and should I get a protector of some kind if it's going in and out of a pocket?

Welcome. And hope you enjoy the new camera. Your decision is close to why I picked up a GRD. However, already had an LX3. Just didn't like it hanging around my neck as I was cycling. Figured the lens cap was too easy to lose in those cases.

As to the LCD, have put a protector on mine. Good thing, too. While riding yesteday morning hit a bad bump and the camera flew out of the bag onto the pavement. The protector has a scratch on an edge. Otherwise, the camera seems fine. My heart almost stopped beating for a few moments there.

So I'd say yes, get a good protector.

Hi cygnet,

Welcome to the forum. :)

I have a protector on my GRD II, its just one of the thin film types but so far my GRD hasn't suffered any drop etc. Its cheap protection IMO.

There was a earlier thread here about them http://ricohforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3 ... ctor#p2272

Check the thread and perhaps Google search for the Dicain screens that Pavel mentions. They look good.

Thanks folks, I'll look into a protector, or maybe even a popup shade as referred to in one of those links.
