Reasons to be enthused about Pentax K-01

Well it's at least different

Not sure if it will attract many new buyers but with the XS lenses it is definitively compact compared to a DSLR and I think would also compete with most mirrorless compacts in size. This however could well be the direction Nikon and Canon are looking into. Canon for sure has hinted on making smaller DSLR's to compete with the Micro 4/3 and Nex products.

The Nex'es have the issue that their lenses are BIG, thus although the body itself is blade thin. The body-lens combo is typically as big as most entry DSLR's.

Now what I would like to see is a GXR k-mount that is compatible with these new XS lenses. When they combine both development teams I'm sure they can come up with some interesting products and very complete systems. K-01 with the option to attach the GXR EVF for example.

As for the colors, that has been a Pentax feature before.

I really don't get all this Kmount stuff. It only makes sense to someone who has a bunch of Pentax lenses. Otherwise it would be much better to have say the M mount with a smart adapter. That way at least you could use other manufacturers lenses with the right adapter. I see no advantage to a mirrorless body thats the same size as the regular DSLR(see dpreview comparison to K5)

M mount is manual focus only. Not too many people can live with that (neither can I).

The beauty of the k-mount is the wide range high quality lenses, including primes and pancakes.

This mirrorless body has the advantage that super slim pancakes can be mounted on it. Is that sufficient for significant sales? We'll have to wait and see.

There needs to be the trio of pancakes to make that work as a mini-system. A wide, normal and short tele. Usually 28mm, 45mm and a 90mm like the Contax G system or the Hexar RF offerings. Me I'd welcome a 24/40/85 all in pancake design but with good max apertures.

The current range of Pentax Limited lenses all have AF by screw drive so if AF was required a new module with a screw drive motor and electronics would be needed. Also the DA limiteds do not have an aperture ring so electronic contacts are needed in the mount to control aperture. Additionally some of the new Pentax lenses are SDM only so the PZ contacts would be required to power the in-lens focus motors.

Making a suitable Pentax K mount module presumably incorporating the 16 megapixel sensor would be quite a complex and expensive business. As Ricoh own Pentax they would have access to the necessary technology and patents.

Whoops!

I seem to have missed a bit on my last post and I cannot see a way of editing it. I was referring to the problems of making a Pentax K module for the GXR. The same problems apply to some sort of universal mount that Bertalan was referring to.

As Remko says it's because new users won't be adopting a new mount with a spartan line up of lenses, but have access to a huge variety of existing/legacy lenses. Pentax are very proud of their K mount, which is one of the most successful and long-running AF capable mounts of all time. I don't have any K lenses though, and it's a new system that I cannot afford to adopt just to own a Pentax. I don't like the look of this implementation and will wait for the Ricoh K-mount module if I did want a compact K body.

I was a Pentax user since 1984 and have several great K lenses (Moved to Panasonic G1 on 2009). I would love to have a mirror-less K mount camera. However, the viewfinder is a must for my old eyes! Hope a later model will have a viewfinder.

Fully agree!

Aperture between at least 2.0 and 2.8 please... And in body IS...

the K-01 fits in very well with existing k-mount users who want a new toy as well as users graduating from a point-and-shoot to an interchangeable lens system. it offers an upgrade path for the latter group too - their lenses will still work when they move from mirrorless to DSLR (except for the rumoured new lenses with the rear lens elements that sticks out).

anyway, i think compact + k-mount simply do not go together  its a FF mount after all. the registration distance distance is rather long (unlike the M mount). a GXR A12 K-mount might make the GXR look rather unwieldy. i'll prefer to stick to the A12 28mm for a compact setup and bring my K-5 when i don't mind the additional weight.

That 40mm pancake sure it thin though!

It is thin but don't forget that some of the lens is taken up by the deeper K mount - more than 1 cm deeper than say an M mount and more than 2 cm deeper than a Sony E mount or Fujifilm X mount etc. Total thickness of camera and lens might be worth looking at... although to be honest I am not that sensitive about lens length. Most of mine (all M mount lenses) are 40ish to 68mm in length. Mounted on the GXR M mount they feel just right. More importantly, they shoot and deliver results just right.

For me the K-01 works great with the DA lens!
I love using my K-01 with the 35/2.8 macro lens for shooting flowers, etc.
Plus, the battery lasts forever (at least for me).
I took this combo out today and it is such a perfect fit with that lens.
