RAW Files corrupt on import into LR4.1

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has seen the attached problem with imported DNG files. The files provide a clean preview in camera and also via Irfanview. Unfortunately, on import into LR, the following happens. This has occurred in only 6 out of approx 500 files processed to date.



I'm assuming its a LR problem. Has anyone seen this before and does anyone know a fix?

Hi Frankoz, this is an interesting issue. The problem with RAW preview is that many image viewers and editors show (by default) embedded thumbnail, which is in fact JPEG. Could you please somewhere upload your source DNG (dropbox, google drive, etc...) so we can take look at it with other RAW editors?

Hi John,

Thanks for posting your example photos. I tried them in latest Silkypix and sure enough, they are corrupted. I'm getting the same result as you from LR4.1. Do you have an example photo with horizontal orientation or the problem appears only in vertically oriented photos? This reminds me an old problem with an initial GXR A12 50mm FW, which also corrupted DNG files in a very similar fashion. And if I remember the problem correctly, it also happened with just vertically oriented photos. Did you take them using continuous mode?

I'm afraid, there is most probably nothing you can do with these shots, except to inform Ricoh about this issue.

BTW, what SD card do you use? Could you try also another card? Maybe it's just a bad SD card that causes this issue?

These were the first and only files that I've had the problem with to date; so I don't know if landscape mode photos will be affected.

Luckily the photos concerned aren't important - I'd be less tolerant if they were. I will contact Ricoh.

With respect to SD cards, I am using Sandisk SDXC? (hope that's correct) 8gb and have also recently bought an Eyefi X2 Pro 16gb - not sure which one I was using when they were taken.

It's definitely bad to see the corrupted DNGs. We will see if it happens again.

As far as I know, SDXC are currently not supported by Ricoh cameras. But if it's 8GB, then it's most probably SDHC. SDXC is used for high capacity cards (32GB and bigger). As for the EyeFi, I've read some reports about occasionally corrupted images transferred via wifi. But I guess this was not that case? Transferring large number of DNGs over wifi must be a painful experience

Yeah you are correct about the 8gb card. Similarly with the EyeFi, there have been a couple of teething problems, but it is working quite well at the moment.

You are right; it is relatively slow compared to just plugging the card into a PC, but it has a convenience factor. All you need to do is leave the camera on and the download to the linked PC (or iphone) is automatic. It'll be more useful on holidays when I've frequently hated having to download a bunch of files at the end of the day - I can now set it copy simultaneously to 2 separate drives (and backup to Smugmug as well) while enjoying a beer or glass of wine.

My kids also like the ability to upload selected files to an iPhone/Android - this works well with the ever increasing influence of Facebook/Google+/Instagram etc.

The aspect you mention of corruption occurring through the wifi upload process is worth keeping an eye on. I'll report more if that turns out to be the issue.

Thanks again for your feedback; gotta say I'm loving the Ricoh. My other camera (Pentax K5) is feeling neglected at the moment.
