R8 & R7 Barrel distortion test - big surprise!

When I first shot with R8, I almost immediately noticed a very small amount of barrel distortion. So I did the following "artificial" barrel distortion tests and the results are very surprising.

I'm almost scared to say this, but the amount of R8 barrel distortion is almost as low as GRDII barrel distortion!!! Of course, my tests are far from scientific tests. But the barrel distortion is definitely improved in R8. It seems the purpose of thicker R8 body is not only the "GRD appearance" and "fashion" look? The slightly larger ccd, longer distance between lens and ccd and probably redesigned R8 lens resulted in a definitely improved barrel distortion performance.

All taken at 28mm f3.3 (3.2 in case of GRDII) and Auto WB and ISO. Please excuse slightly rotated and skewed samples.

Impressive results from 28-200 zoom lens?

I also noticed less than expected barrel distortion at the wide end of the R8. Impressive.

what do you think about the exposure and vignetting on the grid shots?

Impressive !! Exactly the same findings were posted over at Dcr (unless that was you? ) Thks for all the work on the review !! aj

The grid test shows bad vignetting and different exposure, but it may be because the grid is on photographed from LCD in badly lit room ;) I wouldn't take it seriously.

OK, there is something weird either on R7 or R8 exposure metering. R8 often offers completely different shutter speeds and ISO values (in AutoHi ISO mode). The R8 values are similar to these from GRDII. So I assume the metering was significantly changed in R8. Or maybe it's because different sensor used in R8? Who knows? I will have to do more tests.

With Dcr you mean dcresource.com? I only published this info at dpreview forum.
BTW, there is always a possibility the barrel distortion is corrected by clever camera programming. But I don't think so, because the low distortion is visible on LCD even during framing. So I think it's really so good!

I would love to see the R8 raws. But it's unlikely to happen. Pity, because this camera would be a great pocket zoom alternative for all hardcore GRD/GX100 fans.

Oh man, these results looks great! I am very tempted to get my hands on the R8. I gave my previous camera to my brother (a great Canon PS S-45), so have no camera at the moment.
I `dig' the new look, and each new, little discovery makes me more certain that this is the camera I want. I have been holding my eyes on Ricoh R-series since R6 or something like that :)
Either way, I am waiting for either DPReview's review, or your review, odklizec.
As said, I am very tempted to just buy this camera!
Patience is a virtue, I guess :)

Yes Dcresource.com , well great that another person as commented on this positively.Unfortunately the r8 had just a recommended review over at http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews_ricoh_r8_6.php didn't like the noise

I will put that in a new thread so it doesn't get missed, delete if you don't think it needs a new thread cheers again aj
