When I first shot with R8, I almost immediately noticed a very small amount of barrel distortion. So I did the following "artificial" barrel distortion tests and the results are very surprising.
I'm almost scared to say this, but the amount of R8 barrel distortion is almost as low as GRDII barrel distortion!!! Of course, my tests are far from scientific tests. But the barrel distortion is definitely improved in R8. It seems the purpose of thicker R8 body is not only the "GRD appearance" and "fashion" look? The slightly larger ccd, longer distance between lens and ccd and probably redesigned R8 lens resulted in a definitely improved barrel distortion performance.
All taken at 28mm f3.3 (3.2 in case of GRDII) and Auto WB and ISO. Please excuse slightly rotated and skewed samples.

Impressive results from 28-200 zoom lens?
