R8 low light/indoor performance

Hi all,

I am seriously considering a Ricoh R8, but I'm asking myself if this camera is a good indoor/low light performer, especially if compared to fuji f100fd.

I could find this photo

on flickr...I think that this user used Tom Caldwell's tweaking (see dpreview forum), but the result is not really convincing to my eyes...noise is quite present and some artifacts are noticeable...similar photos made with the fuji seem more smooth.
Probably this pic is not a good example, but, in conclusion, what should I expect from the R8?

thanks

Hi rodzio and welcome here! Sorry, I was a bit busy and forgot about your post ;)

I think the R8 low light performance is good, considering it's small sensor compact. Actually, I think the R7 and R8 high ISO performance under low light is better than GRDII or GX200 (speaking about JPEG). The only problem of R8 is somewhat strong JPEG sharpenig, which seems to be optimized in R10.

See for example my post about R8 in Sushi bar:

R7 noise reduction performance agianst GX200 and GRDII:

And this post about R7 chroma noise removal. R8 has very similar chroma noise removal characteristic:

If you want to know something specific about R8, feel free to ask. BTW, I would suggest you to consider R10 in these days. I don't have R10 in my hands yet, but according comparison at DC.Watch.Impress. Ricoh seems changed sensor in R10 and the new one seems to work slightly better than the one in R8 (along with changes in JPEG processing).

thanks for your kind answer!

the R8 interests me because of its interesting price in this moment ;)
I'll soon take a look at your links :)

ok, I've seen the difference R8/R10 and it's quite impressive!!!

but the R8 tweaked with Tom Caldwell's settings how performs in a similar test? (I've compared the images at 400ISO)
