R10: Strange behaviour from IS?

Hi,

excuse me if this has been posted already, but I could not find it via a forum search.

Today I made two photos, just to try something out:

and

Now, I think that those two pics are very different, yet the only difference was, that the second picture has been shot with IS turned off.
Is it really possible, that the IS has such a big effect on image quality, and could this be the problem why the R10 has got such a bad rep. noise-wise?
I'm quite puzzled!

The first image looks like improperly focused and not blurred by IS? You see, if it would be an IS problem, there would be blurred everything, including the foreground details (box with CDs). However, there is always a chance it's caused by IS. I guess you took this photo with the camera lying on a desk or attached on a small tripod? In this case, it's definitely better to turn the camera IS off because it can cause erratic results. There has been written a lot of articles about this IS phenomenon. See for example this page...

Hello,

thanks for the link!
Well, the camera focused on the same point, but I will try it again (when I'm at home) with manual focus, just in case...
And yes, the camera was lying on a solid desk.

Will report back later.

Ok,

you where right, it seems, that the problem was focus related.

still, even with manual focus they don't look the same...

Thanks for your help!

Yes, this second image looks exactly like a problem caused by enabled IS while the camera is lying on the stable surface or mounted on a tripod. Just don't forget to disable IS in cases like this and your photos should be fine ;)

well, I think this is part of the learning curve, isn't it?

But yes, now I won't forget to turn of is when mounted on the tripod (or maybe even in bright light), as I do like the camera output much better without IS. Still, sometimes IS really helps!

Thanks for your help!

Keep up the nice forum, I hope the "Ricoh around the Globe" Project turns out as great as possible!
