Tricky operation it seems, bringing oil rigs into port when the winds are high: one tug pulling forwards, two acting as brakes and positioning aids at the rear...I had to watch for a while just to make sure it was going right to left and not vice versa... ;)

Good to see the GXR getting an airing Andy. About the time you took that shot I was sailing in the first race for the Chanonry Club Championships in the adjacent firth and I agree it was windy (F5 gusts)! Also it was an ebbing Spring tide with wind against tide so very choppy. This is a nice shot. There is a rig alongside in Invergordon at the moment so maybe we should try some industrial shots with the GXRs?

Here is a b&w version, taken from beach-level. I think you, Richard, posted a version of this memorial some a few weeks back? This is my take on it...I thought it was a nice contrast, with the memorial's story of the local folk leaving to a new life in far flung corners of the world, and the modern-day reality of these oil rigs monsters and their attendant tugs inching their way home again against wind and tide...

I like the time-lapse idea David! From this angle here, the rig was moving left to right giving the impression it was leaving...I got myself quite confused!

Great shot of the memorial stone - you managed to catch it more evenly lit than I did (I think I may even have used some fill-in flash to compensate) - but the rig backdrop adds a lot of interest and a sort of inverse context which lifts this shot of the stone well above the tourist website versions.

Peter, I did wonder if they were getting paid by the hour... ;)

Richard, I was very with the light: as can be seen by the shadow, the sun is just brushing the face of the stone, picking out the inscription. If I had been there half an hour sooner, the shot would have been hopeless...glad you liked it though! :)

And thanks to you David, also!
