Philippine Lenten Rites

70 kilometers north of Manila lies the province of Pampanga where devout Filipinos annually practices self-flagellations and crucifixions in the observance of Lent and the Holy Week. Penitents perform their tradition in the hope of gaining favors from God.







This 50-year old tradition is nonconforming to the Catholic Church's teachings, the solemnity for the tradition stays, with the villagers passionate to their faith and spiritual practice, constantly remaining pure in their vows and to express gratitude for favors granted.
