I'm interested in it only really to see if it gives a hint where Ricoh may be going....if it does I've missed it. Sadly the Ricoh UI does not seem to have made it to the new Pentax (although the preview does say the menus were not ready to review). It is up against some tough opposition and the common sensor and lack of a lens ring control look a bit underwhelming to me - but it does have strap lugs (Don)!
Need to see some photos of course before passing judgement.
I think the comment "GX300" says it all. A Pentax simplified and retro'ed GX model. Set up more mass market than enthusiast. Pentax makes great gear and perhaps in a more simple populist style. Ricoh possibly said to the Pentax crew "hey guys make a camera to the GX specification - leave you to it" - this is what Pentax might make of the GX300.
The Pentax Q is a case in point. A great little camera but more consumed by modes and in-camera processing. But a whole lot of fun. I have grown to like the lttle PP functions built in - rotating, cropping, apply styles (multiple layers). If you are sitting their bored you can fiddle there "enhancing" the images you took "yesterday" - almost as good as a book or a newspaper.
The Q with some added GXR "smarts" might still have a small sensor but it would be a powerhouse to test ingenuity.
The quick dial out front is a great idea - a sort of Ricoh "My Mode" idea but in reality it only supports several sets of effects and these are mutually exclusive until you change the set from the menu. Good but not connected up very well, but I have compromised with a set: natural, bleach bypass, reversal film, black & white. Each of these can be tweaked - so I am happy enough.
What is more puzzling about the MX-1 is the statement some while back that Pentax was going to concentrate on dslr and Ricoh on "compact cameras". Perhaps this has gone by the board as the Q has been re-issued and now we have the MX-1 and the CX7 has not appeared.
My editorial revise of the above statement: "Pentax is going to concentrate on cameras that might sell in some numbers and Ricoh might fiddle around with the 'way out' technical stuff to show their expertise and might release some of it one day after the guys in the lab have had some fun with it".
I look this camera in shop yesterday, and I must say, I'm not so impressed.
First thing that bothers me is the lack of flash for external use.
Second is,
Menu . my God, after Ricoh menu, this is soooo messed up
