New Ricoh owner that comes from Pentax world

Hi there everyone

Ex-pat Scottish guy living in the States (Houston TX)

I recently took the plunge and made a significant committment to Ricoh. My reason for the decision was two-fold; as a dedicated Pentax user for many years the recent purchase by Ricoh made me aware of their products (not really considered them prior to this) and I have been suitably impressed, and the second reason was the release of the M Mount module.

For some time i have been looking to get a high-end compact system to augment my Pentax K5 setup. As "compact" as the K5 and limited lens are I still feel the need for something i can carry about routinely. I believe that carrying about the K5 and a range of lens should be limited to specific photography trips. I just want a camera system that i can carry about all the time (within reason). How many of us have seen a photographic opportunity and we have not bothered to take out our DSLR?!!!! I do a lot of traveling both for work and pleasure. I often go to places where personal security is an issue and i felt i needed a high quality compact solution that has a lower profile than a DSLR. I am also interested in people and street photography and sometimes a big DSLR with a large lens results in a reaction in the subject that is not conductive to getting the desired shot.

I considered a number of options but when the M mount was finally available in the States I made my final decision and snapped up one of the M mount modules, a GXR body and various Voigtlander manual focus lens. I am obviously still on learning curve especialy coming from the autofocus DSLR world but i am having a lot of fun and getting results that i am happy with.

So glad that i made the purchase and so happy that it was Ricoh that bought my beloved Pentax, looks like the start of a beautiful relationship :)

Happy to join the Ricoh community

Yes welcome Pudser and enjoy the Ricoh experience as I am also coming from the Pentax world too.

Hi Pudser and welcome here! Nice introduction and great photos you posted so far! Many people may see the absence of AF in the M mount an error, but I think it's a great step back to the roots of photography. One can become a better photographer because he actually needs to think about the composition and not just pressing the shutter and hoping that the camera will do the rest of work. I consider the absence of AF a perfect tool to learn patience.

Enjoy your new toy and our peaceful community! ;)

Pavel, Thanks for the kind comments

Yeh i am with you on that thought, one of the reasons that I bought the M mount module was the it would force me to learn new techniques and hopefully make me a better photographer

Hello Pudser,

I'm also in Pentax world, even if I sold my K5 and his 16/50 f/2,8, just to keep my Kr.
Can you please tell me if a GXR is really lighter than a "classical" DSLR reflex?

Morning Gyl, I don't have the A12 M Mount nor do I know how much a "classical" DSLR reflex would weight but I just checked Ricoh's website and the A12 M Mount mounted on the GXR body with battery and card weigh 370g. I then went to the Voigtlander website and used their 35mm 1.4 lens M mount lens for comparison and it weighs 200g. So that combo would total 570g as a reference for you. (That's 20 ounces or a little over a pound for the rest of us)

I think my Nikon D200 is 830g without battery and card as a comparison and their 35mm 1.8 DX lens weighs 200g.

It's harder when you become older tu have a too big photo bag!
I wasn't interested bay the GXR body at the beginning, but I'll more look at it now...

Actual weight of body, EVF, M mount, battery and card on my scale is 430 grams (not far from Duane's figure). I would advise getting the EVF as an essential to using the unit in sunlight so you are not dependent on the screen. And yes the aging body does not want to lug around a lot of weight. For a short time ok but not for a length of time.

Gyl
So i took my GXR+M Mount unit+various Voigtlander lens to Manila and Boracay as my first field trip for the new setup. As i mentioned previously i took this compact set for security and convenience, as for security I should not have worried as i saw a lot of people with DSLR. I suppose was being a bit silly as the vast majority(all?) of the DSLRs manufactured are made in this part of the world and increasely in the Philippines itself. But nevertheless it was a lot of fun to use this setup and yeh it is so much more convenient, and the quality, well i will be posting the results soon after i have completed the post production. But i will say i am VERY pleased with what I have see so far. I use the K5 with the battery grip and I also use the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 OS lens which is a monster so the difference is very marked. I am VERY happy with my purchase, I am looking forward to the K mount sensor that is rumored!!!! The only gripe i would have is that i have been spoiled by the low light performance of the K5 and i find that i get best results from the Ricoh setup in daylight, so i am not getting rid of my beloved K5 yet:)

Good research!

I actually have the Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 and it is amazingly small and gives a certain look to the photos, however i splashed out on the 35mm 1.2 (First Edition) which has been discontinued now (i took advantage of existing stock held at Cameraquest). Without doubt the 35mm 1.2 is one of the best lens i have ever used, the APS crop takes it to normal focal length and the color rendition is out of this world. The downside apart from the cost is that it is one of the heaviest lens of its type. But well worth it for sure

I have the M Mount on my wish list but since I don't have any lens to go on it I will just have to wait a bit. I'm waiting for the arrival of the APS-C Zoom to see what direction I go in next.

So I must go into a shop to see a GXR body because I don't realize exactly its weight!
And I remember some M like my wonderful Voigtlander 75 f/2,5 and also my Summicron M 35 f/2 made in Canada.
I enjoyed my photos even if I should need AF sometimes...
