Dear All,

I've just tried a Ricoh GR camera, and it's a great camera indeed. I'm really surprised about the image quality.

I bought one but has some sensor issues so I'm going to replace it with a proper working one...

As a new member I'm here to ask a lot of questions! Sorry if I bother you...

I would like to shoot in dng but I really like the camera effects as the positive film and the hi-cont Black and white. I was wondering if there is a way to get the same effect in lightroom/photoshop without shoot raw+jpegL all the time (to avoid to occupy a lot of memory on my mac)... Is it possible, if I shoot only raw with the effect applied to get the effect back in post? otherwise where I can find a really similar preset for PS/LR?

And the last thing... I've seen that is possible to apply various presets to switch quickly the camera mode... do you know where I can find a tutorial to get some suggestions and to set it up?

I've just shot 1600 iso all the time just switching the f stop if I'm in low light. I'm really interested in photojournalism.

oh the snap focus function is amazing...

all the best

If you shoot in dng you can use the GR on camera raw developer to get all the effects from one capture that you desire. It is not as comprehensive as post processing but it may give you all the variations you need. You can delete any of the images not wanted even before they leave the camera.

Of course if you wish to spend more time in manipulating images off camera then keeping the dng file as the "negative" allows better control at that level. But the on-camera raw file processing is actually quite useful.

Hi fil,

Welcome

One suggestion I have for a high contrast B/W is our own Don Springer (posts under name of Streetshooter  here) has a plugin for such an effect.
Have a look here - http://streetshooter.net/streetshooter-presets/

Don often frequents this forum and is a long time user of the Ricoh GRD series.
Don where are you when we need you! :p
Check out his blog and podcasts too. :D

Thanks for the replies!

I'll take a look to the blog too! Looking forward to get the camera replacement to take some snaps!

All the best

Wow I love this camera!

And here I am with another question... =)

I've noticed that when I shoot only in Raw (Not Raw + Jpeg) and I take a look to the pics I've taken on the camera, when I zoom in to check if I've got a sharp focus the image appears pixelate... is this normal?

Thanks and all the best

Yes, it is, since there is no JPEG registered !
Then, you are watching the tiny JPEG embedded image in the RAW, something like an icon...

This is an oft commented matter. For those that insist on only "doing raw" as the lcd can only quickly show jpg images and has to rely on a vga-size jpg that is embedded in the raw file. As a result the tiny jpg doesn't zoom very well.

So one might ask "why do you even need to zoom into a jpg image in playback if the jpg is "no good' ". Perhaps the raw could be made better? It is often said that the only reason for the zoomed jpg is to "check focus". If so there are three alternatives - firstly to embed a full size jpg image inside the raw file (forever) and created super-large bloated raw fies to clag up the storage with something only ever needed for occasional playback (which is currently not done). Create raw+jpg files and dump the jpg (or raw) files later (which most can live with). Or shoot raw and with the file in payback mode press "menu" for (default) "RAW Development", press right arrow, then press menu and a full size jpg will be created three quick key presses without any scrolling necessary and the resulting image will be inserted on file on demand right after the original raw file and can be zoomed to maximum magnification. Then, once satisfied, can be immediately deleted. Therefore raw plus occasional full size jpg can be had with next to no bother and any user can safely only "do raw" to their heart's content. But maybe an on-demand full size jpg is simply too hard?

If this is not simple enough perhaps and maybe an option to embed full size jpg inside the raw file is the only way that this "problem" might be overcome. But please make it optional only for those who like bloated but super-easy "raw only" files as this person for one does not want it made compulsory - I like it just the way it is - there is an easy way around it for those that choose to properly use the tools that are already provided.

Even Apple computers allow batch deleting of file types if we get just a little past the superficial "easy interface". The prickle in my sock is the wisdom that somehow auto batch processing of raw files on computer is somehow more sophisticated that in-camera doing much the same thing. Surely the raw file is the negative and can be massaged by the skilled operator but you also get the right to make a mess of it as well. But if 90% of the jpg images that come out of camera are more than good enough then why worry with the raw file? Ah, but someone said "the only good file is a raw file ...". I rest my case, the ability to do one's own thing is always good.
