Hi. I am a newcomer to the forum but an old timer to photography who found his camera case feeling heavier each year. So I searched for a smaller camera with an APS –C sensor, interchangeable lenses and a good internal/ external viewfinder and landed up with a Ricoh GRX and two A12 lens modules. And what a good find this has been.
Having started with pure manual cameras with no exposure metering and progressed through the great names of German and Japanese medium format and 35 mm equipment, I realise how elitist photography was in those days. It was not just a question of price but a passion to explore cameras, chemicals and materials and find solutions to the very many photographic challenges. Out-of-the-box ideas were welcome and differences well appreciated.
Having read everything I could find on the GRX on the Internet, it became clear that 97% of the reviews are commodity reviews and that this camera is “misunderstood” because it is not a commodity. It is in fact an elitist camera meaning there is intelligence and a touch of magic about it. The system is well thought out, well engineered, not perfect and thoroughly interesting.
Firmware 1.29 also shows that there is a passion for perfection amongst the Ricoh camera team who are to be congratulated on a fine product.
To all of you on this forum this is not “new news” ….but for lesser mortals like me who have only just discovered this camera system, it is refreshing.

Hi timepass and welcome on the forum! Nice to see you found the GXR and our little community we have here. Enjoy the forum, your new camera and please, don't forget to post some photos!

I'm sure the next year's planned APSC zoom and the lens mount module will make the GXR even more interesting choice for many serious photographers. I expect to see many new faces here ;)

Hi Bernd,

Nice to see you back! I missed you and your precious street photos! ;) Are you planning to jump into GXR when the lens mount module become a reality?

Hi Gerd,
I discovered your site after deciding to buy the GXR and it was most helpful in understanding the camera and its idiosyncrasies. So many thanks for the fast learning curve.
The full snap on which gave you such a headache is pretty limited with the A12 50mm because of depth of field issues but it works well with the A12 28mm. I use a MY Setting in Aperture mode of F8 and a distance set to 5M. That keeps everything between 2.48metres and infinity in focus. I have yet to decide what would be a useful setting for the A12 50mm because Ricoh does not provide a 10metre focus setting. If that existed , then an F13 aperture setting would give a depth of field of just under 5 metres to infinity. Unfortunately one is stuck with a focus setting of 5m or infinity which are not ideal for a 50mm lens. Pity because the full snap facility is one of the functions that allows the GXR to get close to SLR performance.

Sorry Gerd , there was an error in my note to you. For the A12 28mm. a setting for f8 and 2.5 metres focus gives a DOF of 1.14 metres to infinity. For the A12 50mm a setting of f11 and 5 metres focus gives a DOF of 2.46 to infinity. So both Full Press Snap setting are very usaable.
