New CX1 firmware 1.19 available to download

Despite firmware 1.19 my CX1 still fails from time to time. dead - lens-extended.

I marked a battery that I had used and when this same battery caused the problem on more than one occasion thought it was a battery-problem. The battery was removed form circulation.

However it has since re-occurred with another battery.

From my experience it seems to happen only when I have been using the camera regularly over a short period in short bursts. Long enough between sessions to shut the camera down to save battery. But short enough that the camera has been shut down only a few minutes between capture sessions.

eg: typically you are expecting to take photographs but waiting for the opportunity - then taking a few quickly. A common enough situation.

I think I can now eliminate a bad-battery as the cause. The problem is not endemic and in less intensive use I have had no problem. Consequently I wonder whether it is simply that the battery is not up to the demands of the larger high resolution screen and driving the extended lens with the (new I believe) lens extending mechanism.

Ricoh has had this problem since the R8 (at least) and it now extends through to the CX1. Perhaps the smaller battery - good enough for the R6/7 is not up to the higher demands of the later models?

In any case it is a confounded nuisance - especially when you have forgotten a spare battery and you have to hand carry a useless dead lens-extended camera all day as you cannot return it to its case or otherwise safely carry it without damage to lens.

It needs fixing rather urgently - I would also prefer a return to the battery size that is common to other Ricoh models - why the later R series and the CX is out on its own little battery limb defies me.

Maybe originally it was necessary for the R6/7 for size reasons but this hardly remains true since the larger R8 body was introduced.

Have had a respite from the 'dead camera' effect on the CX1 - has been behaving itself more recently. I have not done anything to chnage the camera or its conditions of use so I expect the situation to re-occur.

Last time it happened I was demonstrating the CX to an interested neighbour and extolling its virtues when: the camera suddenly died. mmm a bit embarrassing and one lost prospective sale.

Of course I whipped out a spare battery and fixed the problems but the damage had been done.

I have not had a normal shut down either so I must be getitng some good life out of the last bettery inserted. So it will be interesting to see if next time it will shut down gracefully or whether it wil just die.

As we cannot seem to replicate this problem at will I am starting to wonder if it might even be a bad batch of chargers that do not fuly charge batteries? If Ricoh cannot find the problem, it is not a battery capacity/size problem, and the problem is intermitant then maybe we should be extending our bases to look for the problem?

Of course the GRDIII, like all my other Ricoh cameras (excepting R8) has no problems and can handle an orderly shut down when the battery is to low.

The same problem with the R8 seems to indicate that it cannot be the charger - oh but I am using the R8 charger sometimes ...
