My GR is back

Hello everybody. I got recently my GR back and happy with it even if it took SOME time to fix its smashed LCD. I diid miss its compact form, high ISO and TAV mode. Haven`t done any specific shoting with it yet so the pict are just a form of reintroducing myself and my GR. A crazy ISO comparison, a walk to bank to pay for repair and a selfie where a good good use of light gives it more character. Stanislaw

I love that bank! Cardiac arrest territory even before you reach the ATM and see your balance. Glad that your GR is returned. Some of us would like to hear a bit about the differences between the GXR A12 28 and the GR from an image quality stand point.

Your b&w images really sell the GR well! And, like Richard, I think the bank pic really rocks! :)

Thanks a lot Richar and Wiener. I had an idea long time ago about The Bank, something with an arranged or staged scene with it as a backdrop so I am glad you like it as it is. As to comparison between A28 and GR, I`ll try to make it a soon as possible. In fact, one can have them at quite reasonable price at my local dealer.

Hi,

I would love to see a comparison between the GR and A28! I've spent all week debating the two, looking at lots of photos online etc.

Do you by chance happen to have any images that were taken by both cameras? How in your opinion do they compare in image quality?

How much is the GXR/A28 at your local dealer? I was bidding on one today on ebay and got outbid last second, so quite dissapointed!

A comparison or thoughts on each would be great! From what I can tell online, the GR is sharper with higher resolution but the colours seem more faded, but that can be fixed in post process. The GXR colours I think look nice though.

Thanks.

Here`s my little contribution to GR vs. A12 28 discussion. I`m not a proff reviewer, it`s just a quick shot. Sorry about color. I`m mainly B/W guy and from what I heard and read ( Ming Thain site ) , Nikon A has better color but Ricoh is super with B/W. Ricoh can go much higher in ISO but personally I wouldn`t bother going beyond 6400 ISO if you use straight of camera JEPG. Maybe with Raw and Noise treatment you could get a stop or two but honestly it`s not a Nikon Df or Sony A7s. All in all it`s a bit supprising how well GXR keeps up with the latest. As you may have noticed its crops are bit smaller due to 12MP against GRs 16MP. However GR beeing bit sharper (MP and the lens ), GRX has quite appealing mellowness which some people might go for. My local dealer in Copenhagen sells brand new A 12 28 with body for 1998 Dkr. Stanislaw
p.s. oh my, upon very close scrutiny I discovered that A12 28 focus was a tiny bit off, sorry for that. Both cameras were shot at f:5,6 and the distance is little over 1 meter.

Hey,

Thanks a lot for the comparison! Both cameras look very good. You can see the GR has extra sharpness and less noise at high iso than the GXR. However its very close and both look well.

I actually just bought a GR! It arrives tomorrow. Was given an excellent price. I wanted a GXR + 28mm, but I didnt win the ebay auction. They are quite hard to find in UK/Ireland. Your local dealers price is a great for a new one.

Thanks again for the comparison.

Congrats with GR. for sure you`ll be happy with it as I am. One thing more. GXR with A 28 is heavier and feels more sturdy then GR so don`t rough it up. Right now it`s a storm here in Denmark and I have a GH-3 filter adapter with filter on GR. A very usefull addition. As to wide converter, I dopped the idea for time being. It`s expensive and adds much more bulk to otherwise supercompact GR. My personal solution is a GXR m-mount and VC 15/4,5 tiny lens giving me APS-C eq. 22,5mm. Cheers

Stanislaw,

Thanks for the comparison and I'd say the winner is the GR with extra 'depth' in the images - I suppose it's better contrast really or a greater dynamic range?

Looking at the right hand window a lot became clear to me - you do live in an asylum!

I hope the storm is not too bad - it certainly knocked Scotland for 6 (sorry, cricket term old chap) when it passed through here on Friday morning (more to come next week). Still, I've more firewood now.

Richard
