Monuments to Chaos

Wiener

Active Member
I found these grave stones jumbled together in the Central Cemetry, Vienna (Zentralfriedhof). These are from graves so badly damaged by WW2 bombs that they could not be re-assembled.
There was something in the chaos that I found touching; here is my attempt to express the sheer variety of materials present.
I guess some of them would have worked as an entry in the 'textures' competition?
Also good to find that the S10 DOES produced GX100 type images! ;)

Andy, many of the broken stones look quite fresh rather than lying unmaintained outside for over sixty years.

That is true, Peter. I think that the quality of the material and the workmanship was of a very high standard when these tombs were originally constructed.

Some images, IMO, are indescribable in human terms. I think you have touched on this. Sonnenschein is the saddest for me :( . "hope springs eternal". Thanks for posting.

Chris,
I think it is very forward thinking of the town of Vienna to leave these 'monuments' in their present condition; as you indeed say, they are a permanent reminder of what is so often swept under the carpet and ignored. To me, strangely, this is one of the few places in Vienna where I can get away from the superficial and touristic 'Disney-World' of past Empire and spend a peaceful hour or two in the real world. It is not a sad place but, in my mind, a positive and motivating one.
Glad you liked them (I think they maybe a little over-sharpened, but I was trying for such an exaggerated effect...)
Cheers!
