Peter, it is not often that one can see a swimmer in these waters, though as a teenager I did swim here but probably not for fifteen years or so! The North Sea can be a little cold...on the positive side, no beach umbrellas either!
Metal detectors; well perhaps not a hobby for people around here, but often thought to give one a try...
Nice suggestion!

Andy, if you can, you should definitely give it a try. Metal detecting is a great hobby. It's great combination of hiking, exploring the secrets of history and (sometimes) hard manual work. You will definitely feel few "unknown" muscles after a day of swinging with the detector and digging holes in the hard soil. I absolutely loved this hobby and hope to return to it at some point. Unfortunately, I'm now without detector. I will probably return to it when Lucia will be old enough to dig holes on request
Beaches are unfortunately full of trash or damaged items. But could be also "full" of lost rings or gold chains! I guess Scotland with its old and rich history could be full of interesting artifacts? Just take care to not detecting at known archaeological locations.
