Folks, this is it. I am about to retire the Ricoh GR. It was/ is a fantastic camera and I have really enjoyed using it for street and travel. While I am currently dabbling with film again, I have decided to invest in a large compact with a viewfinder for my future use. Haven't figured it out yet, maybe the X100s/ X100T or something else with a 4/3 or APS-C sensor.

Anyway, decided to take a long walk with the GR and found myself snapping away at many of the familiar buildings, structures and objects that grace my path every day. As usual, the Ricoh seemed liked an extension of my hand and eye, capturing precisely and quickly to my satisfaction. Hope you like these.

HI Spode,

I think we all have to try our own path and find the tools we like to do the job.
I tried a X100 for a while during my GRD IV phase and I enjoyed its use, have some stunning results (for me) but I sold it when I found it a bit much to lug.
I also had a situation where a full battery was drained due to accidentally being powered on in my bag. All these things are fixable of course but I parted with it.
I'm also moving on my E-M5. Try to love it but I can't. Something about its operation just does not gel with me. Plus I want to get back to FF where a 24mm lens is a 24mm lens.

At times I think of paring back to a minimalist kit but in the end I keep options but tote just what takes me on the day/night.
We enjoy your contributions here and there is an "other" section for you to post in, so don't feel the need to leave. The odd non-Ricoh image sneaked into a thread would go unnoticed if appropriate.
You do have friends here! :D

Hi Spode,

This is a very artistic set. Have you tried a GXR? They are very nice to handle and have that Ricoh interface we all love. While the sensor is rather old, they can still produce great results and there are a few used ones out there.

Richard

Hi Spode,
as one who has not yet purchased a GR I wonder what it is that you find dissatisfying about it, what makes you not want to keep it for another try on another day?
For me the GXR was quite a big investment and I initially did not consider I was ready to try the GR as I had plenty of options to experiment and perfect with the kit I had. Latterly, the GR colour output kept me doubting as it seemed to rich and unrealistic for my taste. However, having said that, changing the settings might easily solve this 'problem'!
I did bump into a X100 recently having been blown away by the reviews and was taken aback by its bulk; somehow the brochure and specified dimensions had not prepared me for this!
Good luck with whatever direction you choose from here! And as Tim says, try and keep posting!

Thanks for the comments. Tim, I too am toying with moving to FF (as long as it does not involve too amy lenses). I mainly shoot between 21mm - 50mm so this should not be a problem. I have a few Takumar, Nikkor and 1-2 Leica lenses just waiting for the right camera. But I still long for a single, compact body that is able to do the job. If the X100/ X100s/ X100T don't do it, then maybe I will look at the m4/3 side of the house. Way back when, Olympus used to make some amazing compacts RFs. Richard, I have in fact asked a friend if I could borrow a GXR kit just to see how I bond with it. I've seen some amazing work on this forum come off that camera and so I am hopeful. Andy, to answer your question, there's not a whole lot that is dissatisfying with the GR. The IQ is mostly excellent, the AF speed in most situations is just right, the RAW files are a joy to work with ... and the B&W jpeg output is great! Since I shoot in RAW and adjust the colour palette, the output doesn't really trouble me. I think I've reached the age where pocketability sometimes has to take a backseat to viewability and image stabilization. I mean (IQ and AF and shot-to-shot speed being equal), an OVF/ EVF may allow me to frame shots in a variety of situations and may even, in the absence of OIS, provide steady shots in low light, etc. That's not to say I am willing to compromise too much on form factor ... just looking for a healthy compromise.

And yes, whatever I choose, I intend to contribute to and comment in the forum. Who knows, (as I don't intend to sell the GR) I may yet return to it in the near future if "nothing else even comes close"! :)

The last image here has me curious.
Did you vignette the person in software? or was this how the scene was?

Tim

She was in the pool of light. Heavy cloud cover darkened the rest ... Not that dark though! :) I imposed my own view in LR.
