last breaths of my PX?

My PX is not starting up. After pressing the switch-on button, the green light of the button goes on, there is an initial start-up sound, a quick and tiny contraction-extension of what seems to be the lens (under the casing) - and then after about another second, the power light goes off. The monitor does not light up. Total time on : 3-4 seconds.

I was hoping this would turn out to be a battery problem, so I bought a new original Ricoh battery - but to no avail. It's probably not worth repairing - I'd have to cover a lot of shipping costs in addition to the repair. It's been 3.5 years, and I'm ready to get a new and better camera. Worth trying to open it on my own, if I have never dabbled in this before? Any tricks?

Or - is this the end, my friends?

RIP PX! What happens if you connect it to a PC with a USB cable?
Richard

Hi Richard - power button flashes as it usually does in this situation, but no display on the camera screen, and no input to the computer.

It's not looking good. I know that you have tried another battery as a power problem would be the most obvious issue but do you know for sure that the battery has charged? I'm guessing that you charge the battery in camera with a USB cable in to a mains adapter? What indications of charging are you getting?

Richard

I've charged the new battery with an original Ricoh charger, the one I got with the PX. Have't checked the possibility that the charger is somehow defective. No reason to think so, but I will charge the camera through the cable as a last resort. I'm not at home for a few days, so this will have to wait.

Now I really need Ricoh to put out a weatherproof GR...
