Is The GXR Finished?

That would be unfortunate, but I'd be fine with it. Put all energy into the GRD and get it just right. Perhaps expand the line to different focal lengths or even to B&W models. The GRD models are still my favorite cameras to use. Just as long as they don't go away!

So true Tom, not looking good but lets just hope for the best.

I always hoped there would be a GX300 and a GRD with a 40, 45 or 50mm fixed lens like the Sigma DP series .... I still hope but don't reckon on my chances much sadly.

It will be interesting to see what the GRD V actually is though, does need a bigger sensor than previous versions I'm sure we all agree on that.

I get boring.

So many wanting the "GRD" in various configurations. It does not take a mathematical genius to work out that it would be extremely hazardous to make a low volume camera in separate multiple configurations. The RF and slr types many moons ago worked out that popular focal length types were fine (think) 50mm or 35mm but once moving into other less welcomed focal lengths then a replaceable lens mount was necessary. Today we are not just talking about one principal film size but also multiple configurations of sensor as well.

I suppose that if Sigma can make multiple fixed focal length camera then Ricoh could as well, but they have the mutiple module problem but much worse. No matter what they made and supplied there would always be someone "wanting" what was not there - a DP with ultra wide, or 85mm portrait or even the handy lengths of 135mm and 200mm?

Ricoh sorted this problem to a point by making the LM mount module and letting the user's imaginations run riot. However the GXR is a "GRD" in multiple configuration capability. With a sensor/lens set of combinations that might keep a lot of folks happy. But it is simply 15mm too tall in a situation where a few millimetres can speak volumes.

The other dimensions between a GRD body and the GXR shell are probably too close to be worth arguing about. So sit them side by side and wonder if the GXR camera back could be trimmed down to GRD form-factor size. I think it could - the top aprt of the mount system would have to terminate right at the top right-angle return - all that there would be room for might be a finishing strip cover and perhaps a hot shoe with basic connections. How might this be done? I am not a camera design engineer, but wonders sometimes happen.

If indeed a GRD size back could be made and is also on the Ricoh Radar (if not the road map) then the wish for multiple GRD versions might be instantly satisfied. This would possibly mean that truly there might only be a "GRDV" which in effect would be a new micro-engineered GXR style back and would be the flagship that would carry the rail mount module Ricoh type forward. Arguably if this could be done satisfactorily then the present GXR back might become redundant (pity) and a larger rail mount back with built in evf, etc might satisfy the need for a flagship-capable camera back to take and support dslr/slr lenses.

Therefore the GRD-type rail mount back might be the compact RF camera "to die for" especially if a FF mount module were at all possible. Starts to get exciting. However what compromises would have to be made to achieve this result I will leave to your imagination.

I'm still a fan of the GXR .. Instead of the (monstrous) A16 zoom I would have rather have another prime module to the 35 mm equv. desired in the way the two A12 ... is, unfortunately, probably nothing.

so i asked Henry's if they would be getting buy more stock in at all and this is the reply i got.

the gxr is now discontinued , hence we are clearing stock and will not be getting any more stock. Not sure if thats any sort of definite confirmation, but yeah...

This brings up another drawback of the "lensor" concept. Not only do you get bound to a specific brand (as with buying lenses) but in addition you depend on a specific product line. Not a good situation in terms of protection of investment. Let's hope Ricoh / Pentax presents a follow up to the GXR.

I don't think the GXR system is "finished" as there are still places where it can be bought. I love mine and only got it on the 26th of Sept 2013
