Is Silkypix good on JPEG?

Should I used Silkypix to do some procesing on JPEG pictures from my CX1? I used the soft mostly for procesing the RAW files from my GRD 2, but I haven´t used yet for JPEG files. Any advice?

Sure, why not? If you like it for DNG processing, there should not be a problem with JPEGs. There will be no benefits like highlight/details recovery, but the rest of processing should be more or less the same.

Thanks for the advice. I´ve just read the new Pro version manual and it says that JPEG are treated for Silpypix as it were RAW files. And the more I use Silpypix, the more I like it. It has a really good color rendering.

Whatever they say in manual, JPEG is still JPEG ;) Silkypix may handle the image data like RAW, but the fact is that JPEG is compressed with loose algorithm and only 8bit. While the GRDIII RAW is 12bit. More bits = greater dynamic range and headroom for processing. But the good thing about SP JPEG processing is (unlike using photoshop), that the processing parameters are remembered and stored in an external file. So you can always return back or even use the same processing for different photos. And all this without affecting the source file.

I'm so used to other software, and so full of work with the PC that I can't stand spending more time than I must to, processing photos... So I thank you for this thread! As I generally don't shoot RAW, because I have no idea about how to work them,I can see a good opportunity to get used to Silkypix through JPEG processing!

Rui, do you know what's best? Once you master SP JPEG processing, you are ready for RAW processing, because it's exactly the same ;) You just have to add a bit more contrast, maybe saturation and learn how to deal with noise. I personally don't use any other NR slider than Color noise reduction slider (False Color ctrl).

Thank you, Pavel!

My difficulty is to handle and understand different tools and interfaces. Many times I have no idea what I can do or not. And what to do to achieve some result.

I know this has more to do more with me and the opportunity to explore a new tool. I know Silkypix is much more than I can realise... here's a recent work, thank's to this topic ;-)
Original (no PP, resized only). I'm surprized how GX200 handle this "surreal"/hard/frontal/strong light :-)

Processed with Silkypix (still not sure about the final result, so maybe I'll replace the file):

Processed with CS2 (more bright, but noisier too...):

In the end I prefered the way how Silkypix curves handle the sun light. I couldn't replicate the same with CS2 curves. One vote for Silkypix & JPEG here :D

If you process a JPEG, then why not start with the source RAW file?

Based on the little experience I have, I'm only keeping the JPEG if I can't easily duplicate the 'in camera recipe' when processing the RAW file.

Fabulous photo, rui. :)

Thanks, socket!

Considering the amount of photos I take, I only shoot RAW in specific ocasions. I can't afford the storage space I would need if shooting only RAW ;-)

Another thing is the experience with R3/4 prints that I'm used to, and I haven't made a print from GX200 photos yet. I must try to compare some photos RAWxJPEG... ok, probably I'm starting to sound like an arrogant ignorant talking about things that I don't really know... ;-)

Yeah, I feel that way a lot too.

Can't find it now but, Pavel, didn't you mention SP was on it's way on to the Mac?

Yep, the MAC version of SP4/SPP is under development. There is already available first public beta, alas, only in Japanese.

Oh, great news! I guess I have to wait for a version in english though since my japanese is non-existing :D
