I pictures this man, cutting peats, on the way to town. He didn't seem very pleased to see me so I snapped him from the driver's seat. There is a big increase in peat cutting due to sudden steep increases in the cost of heating oil. A blacksmith on the outer islands is inundated with orders for the old-style peat digging tool (this man is using a spade). Peat, deposited at approximately 1mm a year, is one of the world's major carbon stores.
