Just thought I'd introduce myself, I've been a lurker for a while, and I've always had a strange interest in the GXR, its just been a bit out of my price range to splash out as a second camera. Went from being a canon shooter, to selling it all and getting a Pentax k-01 to use legacy glass on, but ultimately no evf got to me and I sold it, bought the om-d as my hiking all weather camera, and have been searching for a decently priced GXR ever since!
Bought one this evening as a kit someone didn't want, body, 2 OEM battery's, evf, and 28mm all new, for a good price. :D think I may sell the 28 and get the a12 mount however. Depends how much I like the 28.... He he.
Glad to finally be able to join `properly` and I'm sure the wealth of knowledge here will be a great help, seems like a very friendly community :)

Welcome.
Congrats on the GXR a28. That's a very capable camera. I'd like to see what you to. Could you post some photos please?
don

When I get to a computer ill post up a few :) I'm by no means a professional. I just like to have a bit of a play here and there. I like a bit of nature photography, and recently have tried live music and street photography. Still have a lot to learn though :)
look forward to contributing!
also extremely curious as to how effective focus assist is in low light on the a12 mount? Could sneak this into some bigger concerts without a photo pass, stick a 135mm in a pocket and pass it off as a point and shoot to get it in :D

as promised, some random shots of mine :) nothing too extraordinairy. have a bunch more on my facebook page, but i think im going to start a new flickr account and spend a whole lot of time putting everything in order.
as i said, still learning, but, a fun hobby. still relatively new to the whole idea of post processing and using lightroom etc! shot film for some time. then got lazy with digital and started relying on OOC processing. so dont judge me on my processing techniques just yet please haha.

First off, no need to come in a defenseless mode.
The good thing about photography is its about seeing and seeing what others see.....

So, chuck that crapola aside and post your photos.
By the way.... I have no patience for what your doing but I really enjoy looking at this stuff....
Thanks....

A few in Oz.

You can use focus peaking with your lens module as well, even on AF. So you can get an appreciation of what it does without needing the m mount module.

I find that on AF the advantage of focus peaking is that whilst not used to get focus it does show what is in focus therefore becoming an infinite multi-point focus indicator. Also if you look at it closely you can easily see the actual dof in focus. Mode1 is good but I find Mode2 quicker. Once you get used to the initial shock of seeing Mode2 you will really appreciate it. Watch the ripple of the focus peaked areas across the lcd when changing focus - even in AF. Change stops and watch it again - I sometimes play with a bit, as good as watching goldfish in a bowl (grin).

I have my camera function buttons set to Fn1=full screen magnification and Fn2=focus peaking toggle off/on.

Press-hold the delete button and you get a drop down selection of magnification modes. 4x is good general purpose for me but when I want to focus on a specific point I change to 8x magnification.

Soft press the shutter button and you get full screen framing view no matter what focus view you have been using. Set up this way the camera becomes a fluid working tool.

Obviously focus peaking works most usefully with the M mount module and manual lenses but it can be useful even in AF situations as I have noted. I am surprised that the Sony impementation only works at its optimum on unmaginified screen and not at all in AF. The Ricoh version seems to be scaled to the magnification of the screen and works seamlessly in a similar view-manner accross all magnifications right up to 8x.

If you don't have focus peaking on your camera then you cannot have the latest firmware upgrade and should download it from the Ricoh site.

look forward to learning and contributing here.
are there many members from australia on here?

Hi and welcome from a Croweater down south. We have some Cockies here and maybe a Sand Groper or two.
I've been up your way a few times and I think you have some good photo opportunities in the area.

Keep taking and posting pics, for some of our members Australia would be the deep dark mysterious south.
PS: Keep a lookout for the Kangaroos on the streets too.. ;) :D

Don't laugh, we are up to our neck in wallabies and ducks have invaded our neighbour's swimming pool.

So what is the NSW nickname? "Galahs"? And yes, we have them too, I had always supposed them to be an inland thing but the silly sods hang about here making a mess of our acer tree.

My uncle had a Sulfur-crested Cockatoo. Lived a loong time.
It would repeat a lot the standard "Hello Cocky!"

Farmers are called cow-cockies apparently because a bunch of them hanging over the sale yard fence chatting away from a distance sounds and looks like a bunch of those white cockatoos. (grin)

Welcome pv, and I really like these photos of yours, keep them coming.
BTW, the owner of that eye should see an iridologist quick... ;)

haha, its my own eye! it looks like that regularly as im a shift worker, so more often than not, i've had a lack of sleep.
They did tell me that doing shift work will take years my life! and now i believe it. :geek: :geek:

im no street photographer, but i quite like the image of the older gentleman reading the paper :)
and still playing with different B+W processing until i find something that really works for me, i think i overdo it, i should learn that less is more!
but anyway, here they are :D

Yes I agree a lighter touch works better. Lots of people are now using this effect and it is fast becoming a processing cliche. Best that you do it so that nobody can really tell that you are doing it.
