That's right up my alley Pete. I've been somewhat more ...uh...uh...active in my approach but I like what your doing.
So, could you give me an idea of what pp your doing? HDR is not my thing....yet.... but in time who knows. I do like the combination your getting.....

bracketed -1.9 0 +1.5 on the grd3 in hcbw mode
lightroom v3, select all 3 and export to nik hdr efex pro2 (am playing with 30 day demo)
initial results very like infra red
think I selected #9 b&w realistic and tweaked to my satisfaction.
