Hello, new GR-D1 user. Photoshop question.

I've belatedly joined the club, passing a Jessops on saturday they had the GRD1 at a price that frankly would have been rude to ignore.
I'd been toying with it since they first came out, I'd been a fan of the series since the GR1s, it'll be a pocket camera to have on me all the time (will still use my DSLR for the serious stuff, no offence meant)

It is a little noisier than I'm used to from ISO 200 up, would be interested in any settings for photoshop noise filter that work well with the camera, I shoot DNG.

Cheers in advance.

Hi Paul and welcome on board!

GRDI is still a very good camera, despite its slow RAW writing and (for my taste) a bit too loud run ;) So you did a very good buy! I'm afraid, I can't help you with PS as I'm not using it. But I would suggest you to try the Noise Ninja plugin for PS (visit the PictureCode site).

I personally don't do any noise reduction, except a light touch of color noise reduction and only in high ISO shots (above ISO400). But it's matter of taste and personal preference. GRDI grain is what makes the GRDI photos so special (unlike the GRDII JPEG files). So if you wish to do a bit of noise reduction, remove only the color (chromatic) noise and leave the grain (luminance noise) intact. Hope this helps?

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the forum, :D You must have got that GRD I quite cheap! Sounds like a great buy.

I find ISO 400 noisy, it reminds me of ISO400 film from the 1980s. But they are still quite usable IMHO.

Hope to see some of your images sometime.

The GRD I is a fantastic camera so congratulations to your purchase.
It is noisy but the noise is very pleasing and not too bad IMO even at ISO 1600 in JPG mode. If you use Photoshop just make sure you don't use the noise reduction in ACR over ISO 100 since it does not produce very pleasing results and I have it set to max 5 if I use it at all.
Try using Noise Ninja and download the profiles available for the GRD I, it does a very good job and you can use it as a plugin in Photoshop.
Alternatively go to the Noise Reduction menu in Photoshop and only reduce the noise in the blue channel by setting it to maximum and details to the lowest setting.

What I would recommend you to do is try using the JPGs and compare to the RAW files. Set the image settings to Contrast +1 or +2 and the color depth to -2, this will give you very nice JPGs at high ISO.
