Hello everyone. I'm a GRDIII user and (like Gyl) also sometimes lug around a Pentax SLR (a K20D). I love my little Ricoh, and assumed others might too. So, here I am.

I'm a Canadian ex-pat from Toronto. My parents are Dutch immigrants, and I now live in Pennsylvania and teach landscape architecture (urban and ecological design) at a nearby university. I also do research in Ghana, north India and Nepal having to do with community-based adaptation to climate change. And I work with students doing participatory community development in the inner city. It's a stretch.

I look forward to learning about the GRDIII as a street camera. In return, maybe I can share some recent tests I've done using the Ricoh for aerial photographs of landscapes and natural habitats. Also, I've found the GRDIII is great for nonchalant snapshotting in traditional villages where bulkier equipment is frowned upon.

best,

Ken

Welcome Ken! Sounds like you have wonderful opportunities for photographs, I look forward to your postings.

And a welcome from me, Ken. Would enjoy viewing aerial shots, it's not something we see here very often. :D

Thanks for the friendly replies, everyone. This seems like a really good group.

I'll upload select helikite aerials over the next few days on the Landscape/Architecture thread. In the meantime, if you want to see an interactive version of a helikite aerial (helipan), go to the GigaPan.org website:

http://gigapan.org/gigapans/95584

Search 'helipan' or 'krt1' for several others. I'd be happy to discuss details if anyone's interested.

Hi Ken and welcome on the board! A very nice "spy" panos! ;) It must be enormous work to select the best photos that cover the area of interest? BTW, wow do you fix the camera on the kite?

I hope you will find this forum useful and enjoyable ;) People here are very helpful so don't hesitate to ask questions. And please, keep us posted with your new photos! ;)

Hi Pavel,

I had some difficulty loading 2 images at once, so photos of the helikite and camera mount are shown above.

For those stream/wetland images, I take about 40-50 images and cull back to about 20 - 25, making sure there's lots of overlap, and rejecting any fuzzy or angled shots (the helikite can wobble a bit). To upload to gigapan.org, the min. size is 50MB. I use PS photomerge to do the hard work of stitching, then tinker with histogram levels and contrast a bit. I set the Ricoh's interval shooting to 5 seconds. It's actually pretty simple. The skill comes mostly in aiming the camera and walking it around to get the subject well-covered.
