I have been following the forum for a few months, and finally thought this might be an apt time to start posting. I have enjoyed seeing the photographic output here, and the fact that this is a pleasant community.
I am an organic farmer, living on a kibbutz at the desert southern tip of Israel. I have been away from photography for quite a few years - it never was even a true hobby for me, just a way to record special moments sometimes - but earlier this year I felt a desire to start taking photos again, and started to look for a camera. My last camera was a Pentax K-1000, and other than fooling around with my wife's cellphone a bit, I haven't really taken photos for at least six years.
When I started doing research on the various digital cameras on the market this year, I was completely overwhelmed. At the beginning I thought I had my choices down to two or three cameras (one was the GXR - liked the concept), but then other options surfaced all the time, not to mention that this has been a very interesting year gear-wise.
I realized that there was no way I could make a reasonable choice after never really experiencing a good digital camera. So I decided to divide the process into two : first I would get a budget and rather simple camera to see how it is to get back into photography, and after perhaps six months, I would take stock and see what my feelings and interests are. Prices of cameras also a consideration of course, especially as I am entering the game without equipment at all.
I decided to take advantage of the fact that my brother was visiting in the U.S., and finally decided on a Ricoh PX (Ricoh not marketed here in the country). This was because that I wanted an environmentally-sealed camera for my first uses (I wanted to be able to take this to work everyday and conveniently, without worrying about sand, dust or water), and I had been reading interesting things about Ricoh cameras. I knew that if I didn't take photos at work, I don't think I would take time after work to do so, and besides, there are beautiful things to take photos of at work here! I purchased the PX even before the reviews were out - don't know if this was smart, but I am glad that the voyage has started.
I have been using the PX for 3 months now - I see that no one else here has posted anything about this camera - and have about 60 photos uploaded on Flickr, which I will post the link to on the "Ricoh G/PX" discussion forum here on the site. To sum things up, I'm seeing that I'm enjoying this return to photography, enjoying the PX, and already starting to think about a serious camera.
I am also attaching one photo to this post, taken yesterday.
In the meantime, I hope to continue to enjoy this site and to be able to contribute whatever I can. Thank you Pavel for a well-organized and friendly site.
