Hello from Israel

I have been following the forum for a few months, and finally thought this might be an apt time to start posting. I have enjoyed seeing the photographic output here, and the fact that this is a pleasant community.

I am an organic farmer, living on a kibbutz at the desert southern tip of Israel. I have been away from photography for quite a few years - it never was even a true hobby for me, just a way to record special moments sometimes - but earlier this year I felt a desire to start taking photos again, and started to look for a camera. My last camera was a Pentax K-1000, and other than fooling around with my wife's cellphone a bit, I haven't really taken photos for at least six years.

When I started doing research on the various digital cameras on the market this year, I was completely overwhelmed. At the beginning I thought I had my choices down to two or three cameras (one was the GXR - liked the concept), but then other options surfaced all the time, not to mention that this has been a very interesting year gear-wise.

I realized that there was no way I could make a reasonable choice after never really experiencing a good digital camera. So I decided to divide the process into two : first I would get a budget and rather simple camera to see how it is to get back into photography, and after perhaps six months, I would take stock and see what my feelings and interests are. Prices of cameras also a consideration of course, especially as I am entering the game without equipment at all.

I decided to take advantage of the fact that my brother was visiting in the U.S., and finally decided on a Ricoh PX (Ricoh not marketed here in the country). This was because that I wanted an environmentally-sealed camera for my first uses (I wanted to be able to take this to work everyday and conveniently, without worrying about sand, dust or water), and I had been reading interesting things about Ricoh cameras. I knew that if I didn't take photos at work, I don't think I would take time after work to do so, and besides, there are beautiful things to take photos of at work here! I purchased the PX even before the reviews were out - don't know if this was smart, but I am glad that the voyage has started.

I have been using the PX for 3 months now - I see that no one else here has posted anything about this camera - and have about 60 photos uploaded on Flickr, which I will post the link to on the "Ricoh G/PX" discussion forum here on the site. To sum things up, I'm seeing that I'm enjoying this return to photography, enjoying the PX, and already starting to think about a serious camera.
I am also attaching one photo to this post, taken yesterday.

In the meantime, I hope to continue to enjoy this site and to be able to contribute whatever I can. Thank you Pavel for a well-organized and friendly site.

... more of your photos.

Thank you, Genster! I will post the link to the PX set I have on Flickr later on.

I have noticed that you use the GXR P10, so I will probably be asking you and others about this model, as I am contemplating getting this as my next camera, and in so doing getting into the GXR system. But it's a difficult decision, and I will only decide next year.

Interesting website you have, and beautiful photos - I am also a vegetarian...

Good to have you here ! I look forward to see more pictures from your country.
Benvenuto! :D

Hi quester, and welcome to the Ricoh forum.
We don't have much discussion about the PX. Your right. It's just that there isn't many members with this camera.
I look forward to seeing the results of your PX & your GXR .

Benvenuto! :D

Grazie mille, Gab!
To tell you the truth, one of the main reasons for my desire to get back into photography was a trip to Piemonte, Italy a few years ago. We have fallen in love with this region, and hope to return again sometime. We had only a cellphone for taking shots, and I realized that I can't allow this to happen again. We attended the Salone del Gusto in Torino, and afterwards toured the countryside - amazing! Even a cellphone camera can't take away its beauty...

Thank you quester, much appreciated :D
I have a P10 and A12 28mm. Until now I have only used the A12
I love the GXR :D

Hi quester and welcome......enjoyed your flickr photos very much(being a fellow cloud viewer!). Good to see what the PX can do too, as stated already we don't get many here. You seem to have discovered it's potential and abilities though :D .....keep the images coming! ;)

Hi quester and welcome....)

Hello Marcus, and thank you.
I looked at your site, very interesting images - I love the shot of the men in suits above the protest signs - brilliant juxtaposition!

Hi quester and welcome here! Thanks for introducing yourself ans also the PX! To my big shame, I have the PX sitting on my desk for several months. Unfortunately, the lack of time due to my work and family prevented me to publish a reasonable comment or even some photos. It's nice to see there is someone else with an experience with PX. It's definitely a nice little camera in very attractive form factor. It has some quirks and it's not the fastest camera either, but it works quite well and provides great price/performance ratio. Please don't hesitate to post as many photos as you can ;)
