Hello

I´m a user of the PENTAX K10D and - starting from the first day I´ve got this grat DSLR - i searching for a pocketsize "real" compact.

Normaly, I use my MINOX 35GT for this job, but a good develpment is going to be more ande more expencive.

Currently I´m sitting between the two chairs (LX3 and GDRII).

So I´m looking forward to read your topic´s here and to make my desicion.

by the way, i found the GRDII with the GV-2 for 449 EUR, would u recommend to buy at this price?

Best wishes

Hi Koeal and welcome here!

LX3 is definitely great camera with better JPEG engine than GRDII. However, its lens is incomparable with GRDII lens. I mean, GRDII does not need to do some hidden postprocessing to hide the barrel distortion and chromatic aberration. It's just perfect. Even with extension lenses it (GRD) performs flawlesly (OK, except the known orange flaring in case of GT1 lens, but it can be controlled).

So if you are a JPEG shooter, LX3 is probably a better choice for you. But if you don't mind to process RAW, GRDII is way beter option. If nothing else, fixed lens makes the photographer much more creative than with zoom ;)

The LX3 will give you the zoom, slightly faster lens and most important good JPGs and a usable video mode. For this you sacrifice size, need to put up with a lenscap and the lens has a lot of distortion and fringing as Pavel mentioned.

The GRD will give you one of the best lenses on any compact cameras, great build and controls in a smaller package without the need for a lenscap. The downside is the bad JPG quality so you need to shoot RAW and the sub par video mode.

The GRD II is definitely the better camera if you shoot RAW.

You might want to also consider the GX200, it will give you the zoom from the LX3 but with slightly longer reach and slower lens. It has everything the GRD II has and more but it is not so good if you go over ISO 800.

Finaly I bought the LX3 yesterday.

The reason was better noise-performance and thr image stabilistaion.

The results are perfect. - to perfect?
The camera menue needs getting used to.

After all, it was a 50/50 decision. The GRD and the LX3 are both good cameras ins the interesting circle of serious compacts.

DMC-LX3 soled

Yesturday I gave the LX3 to a frind of mine.

The Camera was me a bit to "automatic here and automatic there". The pictures were good, but they´ve looked a bit to sofed. (corrected)

I compared the LX3 JPG´s with the K10d JPG´s. The K10D is known for it´s bad JPG-Quality, but, the pictures wer much better.

So, I ordered the GRDII. Even if i have to process every pic in RAWTHERAPEE.

Is it possible to share the Profiles here with other users?

best wishes
