GXR hanging...

Hi,
I am back from my Christmas/New Year trip, took my GXR with me, and would (rather not...) like to report that my GXR hung for two times. It was stuck in saving a file, did not respond to any button, and I had to remove the battery and restart.
As far I can recollect, both modules were involved -- so it does not seem to be a module issue. As I used SanDisk Extreme III cards, I also do not think that it was a card issue. All in all, Ricoh needs to fix a few more issues than just the A12 AF...
Best regards,
Gerd

Gerd,

sorry to hear of the troubles. While who knows exactly why yet, here's hoping its a firmware issue as that would be easily fixed.

The Sigma DP2 had lockup issues and it took at least one or maybe two? firmware updates before it was fixed. A friend also has a DP2 and he uses his more heavily and experienced lockups nearly every session he used it - he now reports the fw update has fixed it.. My DP2 locked once ever.

I assume you will report back to Ricoh? Hopefully they are aware and have a fix on the way!

My GXR hung a couple of times while i was: 1. saving my 3min HD1280 recording clip.
2. seeing my playback photos while trying to skip the video clip recorded.
3. constant shooting without turning off my camera for more than 30mins.

I am also using an Extreme 3 4GB card.

Too bad to hear that! I did not experience any hang during my short experience with GXR and A12, but I was using the preproduction firmware. There is a big chance that some of the "eleventh hour" changes in final FW broke something? I hope to test this problem when I receive another test sample for long term test.

All possible details about this issue would be extremely helpful for Ricoh engineers to fix this problem ASAP. Next time when it happens (which is most likely), try to remember the last steps you did before the hang and write them down along with your actual camera settings. Eventually, try to reproduce the hang immediately after the first one. Of course, you are not supposed to be beta testers of Ricoh cameras. But the sooner we will know the cause of this hang, the sooner there will be a fix. Pity I don't have a GXR sample right now. I'm sure I could find the cause of this hang because looking for problems in SW is my profession ;)

I feel this very problem, I have it since 22 december and so far I have not had any problems.
Best regards.

Hi all,
Thanks for your support! I will inform Ricoh of the issues, but regrettably, I cannot deliver any helpful information to them.
My firmware is FW 1.0.5 for the body and 1.0.6 for both modules.
On both occasions, the camera hung while writing an images to the card, and it seems to have affected both modules (as far as I remember...).
I format my cards in the camera and format them again to delete the images. Thus, it should not be a card issue -- but I cannot exclude it completely (it was the same card on both occasions).
As this thread shows, I am not the only one having this problem. I regard this as a typical initial problem with a new camera, and I am confident that a firmware release will fix it -- hopefully -- soon.
Otherwise, I am happy with my GXR -- but I have to learn a lot (and, of course, I am still learning)!
Best regards,
Gerd
