GX100 RAW writing speeds with various SD/SDHC cards

Hi folks,

Although the GX100 is not the direct GRD successor, it seems that Ricoh significantly improved the major GRD weakness, which is too slow RAW writing. But the same as in case of GRD, you will have to use the proper SD/SDHC card to get the maximum out of the GX100! Thanks to GX100 guys at DPReview Ricoh forum, in the below table you can see the summarized RAW writing times for different SD/SDHC brands & sizes..

Code:
The "# BLINKS" is just the number of blinks of the camera AF led light. This light apparently shows also the writing progress.
Sorted by number of blinks, where 1blink = cca 0.5sec.

BTW, if your GX100 can write RAW under 8-9blinks/4-5 secs, don't forget to tell us about it! But even if your card is not the fastest card, please, drop your # of blinks/times here too! It would help the other people not to buy SD/SDHC cards, which are not suitable for RAW.

Thank you!

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

I am about to order the GX100 and need help please! The specs I have say 4GB SDHC max.

But this thread seems to indicate 8GB works. If I could order 16GB, I would!

Class 6, of course. What is the max GB for the GX100, please!

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

Unfortunately, I don't know about anyone who tested 16Gb card with GX100. But as it takes 8GB cards, I don't see any reason why the 16GB cards should not work as well? The GX100 is SDHC compatible and the SDHC is about "High Capacity". For example, 16GB card works fine with GRD2 (as reported here).

But personally, I would recommend you to get two 8GB cards (or maybe 4GB) instead of one large. At first, the bigger cards are often slower. See the GRD, GRD2 and GX100 list of cards and speeds. The same brand and speed class is usually slower in case of larger capacity! At second, even flash cards can be corrupted! It's a very good idea to use several smaller cards instead of one big.

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

4GB pqi SDHC Class 6 and 22 blinks ! (Yes,22. Not a typo).
Just received a brand new 4 GB SDHC branded pqi. Supposedly, it's a Class 6 card.
$14.99 and no shipping was a good price.
Performance not so good. 22 blinks seems to be as low (slow/fast) as it gets. So, more like a class 2 at best in reality.
Good to know, not least since I saw a 8 GB Class 6 card from pqi for $25. I pass on that one.
I formatted the card both in camera and computer. No difference.
Btw, I bought it from a well known/rated retailer, not eBay, so it should be genuine enough.

Cheers
Roger

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

Heres a few more. RAW+jpegfine
Transcend 4GB Class 6 SDHC 12 blinks(don't know why its so slow)
Lexar Platinum 2 60X 4GB 9 blinks
AData Turbo Class 6 16GB SDHC 10 blinks
The display says the 16GB card will hold 839 RAW+jpegfine!

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

No longer using these as they were too slow but I originally got a time of 11 secs (~22 blinks) with "My Memory" (online shop own-brand) 2GB 133x SD card, and about 9 secs (~18 blinks) with an ordinary Sandisk 512MB card.

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

Kingston 50x 2GB SD ...9 blinks
Toshiba Class 4 4GB SDHC ...14 blinks

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

Thanks for your reports guys! All timings should be in the list now.

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

8 GB Patriot (Class 6): ~ 14-15 blinks (very cheap, fully sufficient for time-lapse shooting)
8 GB SanDisk Extreme III (Class 6): ~ 9-10 blinks

Re: GX100 RAW writing speeds for various SD/SDHC cards

My new Transcend 8GB SCHC class 6 card . . . 9 to 10 blinks
