GRDIII previews, reviews and full size samples

JW,
My pleasure.

Noise: As pointed out by other users, I have not noticed any distracting noise/grains on the large prints from the GX200 images. That said, there is certainly much to be done for improvement. ;)

Warm image: Speaking out of common sense, I think there is a feature in the E-P1 or any serious digital camera for tweaking the image tone to the user's liking. ;)

Holding off: Let me digress a bit--JW--this is the real reaonn for holding off and saving up http://ricoh-gx.blogspot.com/2009/08/heartquake-ricoh-interchangeable-lenses.html

Maybe Pavel can shed some educated light and start a new thread on the GZ-1 :)

Ohhh mannnn!!!
Nevin...... I REALLY wish you hadn't done that :?
Just when I'd finally settled on the GRDIII ;)

Great news however. I think we've all been expecting something similar.... but its not m4/3?

Pavel - what do you know?

Hi again,

I suppose what I meant by noise, in relation to the GX, was noise above ISO400. The ratio of noise v ISO speed (in the GRDIII) certainly seems to be improving (but I'm no expert pixel peeper!).

Warm Image - Yes I agree, but the vast majority of E-P1 images I have seen, do seem to be warmer by default. I'm not critisising, just an observation, and it seems particularly noticable in the comparison images..... anyone?

Like I say, there are others here who are far better qualified to judge these things, but this is my humble opinion, although I stand to be corrected/educated.

Anyway, am off now too search for more Ricoh GZ news!

A lot of full res. samples (and all ISO values) now available at dc.watch.impress:

Hi!
I'm new here and i serious interest for the GRD III.
The detail and noise level are looking realy good on sample pictures. Maybe this is the best what I ever see in this ultracompact digital category.
Only one thing is look bad:
http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/img/dcw/d ... 2.jpg.html
Look at the black sky on left top...vertical lines.
It's look like same problem on Pentax K20D. With this strange phenomenon, only good for very small prints. I see this problem few more samples on the linked site, but primarily on hi ISO and longer exposure images. Maybe just JPG conversion error, i don't know.
If somebody is capable, please post here another hi ISO and long exp samples (RAW would be the best).
Thank you!
(sorry for my poor english)

Hi no43 and welcome here! Don't worry, your English is fine.

I also noticed these vertical stripes (called banding) and it's a common and frequently reported issue in today's digital cameras, even some rather pricey ones (like D200 or DP1). Unfortuantely, it's not a JPEG conversion issue. This kind of problem is visible in RAW too. So it must be something sensor/electronic related. Probably some kind of interference?

Anyway, I noticed this kind of problem also in some of my GRDII and GX200 photos, mainly in high ISO shots (above ISO400). So my guess is, it's sensor related problem connected to high sensitivities and maybe sensor heating? Sensor heating could be a reason why you see this in long exposure shots.

Some long exposure shots can be found for example here:
60secs:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sotome/3791357375/

30secs:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sotome/3791356881/

I don't see any banding in these two shots. So it may really be a problem of high ISO values? On the other hand, what's visible, is the fact that Ricoh evidently lowered the amount of long exposure noise reduction! GRDII photos at 60 or even 2 seconds were clearly useless (see this test). These from GRDIII looks very acceptable?

DPReview just posted GRDIII sample gallery:
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0908/09081 ... amples.asp

Sorry guys, but posted samples are not a sign of "soon to be available" DPReview review ;) Here is their comment...

We're unlikely to have a chance to review the camera in the near future but wanted to give a flavor of what it's like.

Anyway, it's nice to see these JPEG samples. However, what's not so nice, is the banding issue (vertical stripes across the image) visible in every single ISO1600 shot. And after examining Cris's DNG+JPEG samples and some other high ISO shots at flickr, it's evident that there is something wrong here. Something that is not limited to just one or two sample cameras. As the number of GRDIII users will increase, we will see how serious and widespread is this banding issue? It may be just minor batch of cameras affected by this problem. In worst case, it's common to all GRDIII. I think we will soon see?

The samples I'm seeing are making me feel very good about this camera - can't wait until it arrives. :ugeek:

Carl Garrard from Alpha Mount World just today published his excellent GRDIII review...
http://www.alphamountworld.com/reviews/ ... III-review

If you want an unbiased review from a DSLR owner, Carl's comprehensive review is what you are looking for.

Thanks for the link, this is a rather excellent review, I found it good reading!

I do think that the start up time will be addressed by Ricoh in a later firmware. We know how good Ricoh is at providing updates.

Peter I really like your first series with the GRD 3. Can you share some of the aperture settings used? I wonder how often you shot wide open at 1.9? I have the DP1 which unfortunately is limited to f4.0 at 28mm
