Helpie help.
What do I wrong not being able to update my GR.
First, do I have to unpack FW zip file before copying it to card?
The notice that the update file is selfextracting is a bit confuzing.
I transfered the zip file to card and followed the instruction and GR just confirms the current vs. 2.03. and nothing happens.
Feel a bit stupid because I didn`t have any problems updating GXR. Stanislaw

YES correct. The file you download is a zip file and it needs to be unpacked, then the unpacked file goes on your SD card.
Self extracting files will be able to be unpacked without you needing to installing Winzip or other compression software.

The extracted file has an extension of .frm (firmware) is called rg1_v400.frm
Put the extracted file onto the SD card.

Added [Shift Crop] on [Effect] of [Shooting] menu. - what is this, I cannot figure it out?

Added [AF Mode] on [Set up] menu. It has two options: [Normal] or [High speed]. - good it now seems "instantaneous" in good light, faster in poor light and much the same in macro mode and in AF using mode2 focus peaking confirmation.

Guess does a one-way search for a given contrast level and as soon as it maximises over a prescribed level stops and lets the dof pull it in. Mostly accurate but could be problematical in some cases. In poor light I used 25600 ISO in a test which gave 1/250 shutter speed and therefore no shake - focus was at a reasonable speed and accurate.

I can only presume that the "normal" focus speed is retained as an option because the "fast" speed may not be completely tested and may cause accuracy problems.

A useful upgrade, I like it.

Tom Check out the second column of the PDF link above...

"the effect [Shift Crop] cuts out top or bottom of a verticle image into 1:1 square and saves it."

I suspect some would just do this in PP.
If you are in square mode to start with I guess you wouldn't use it?

Thanks Tim,

Must have had a duh-oh moment and missed the link you had already provided to the update for the manual. I also for some reason could not find it on the Ricoh site. The download of course was easily accomplished.

As usual the upgrade is welcome and provides us with a "new amusement" and refresh on the camera for a while - not quite as much a thrill as a brand new one but a re-kindled interest at least.

Also noted that you can switch to square format original capture easily enough and also the crop ability is there in playback and includes square format, sizing and moving the crop area about. The camera is already well catered for easy access square format images.

However they may have a point regarding perspective if you are in portrait mode especially, there could be times when cropping top or bottom to square might be useful at capture time. Unfortunately you would need to know this in advance and dig it out of the menu - which took a bit of initial finding. Those that might need to use it more often can easily enough set it on in a specific mode for this purpose.

Good idea Ricoh, thanks for another small thought out benefit. Not earth shattering but at least I can understand "why" now.

Now to get them to fix TAv mode runaway ISO ... it should not be this hard, for those that don't mind maxing out at 25600 ISO then they can set that limit other can use the Auto-Hi setting as their limit - surely? There is already a function so that the user can choose whether aperture or shutter speed is adjusted when the ISO hits the limit - but this will only ever be invoked at 25600 the way it works presently (that is the silly bit). Anyway - workaround by setting dynamic range or use sensible setting in the first place and it should never be a problem.

Yeah, I didn't really get it till I loaded the FW and tried it. Then had a eureka moment.
To me with camera in vertical orientation its perhaps a bit like a poor man's shift lens for architectural images. But works at the expense of dumping pixels - 50% of them.
I had opportunity to try it today but didn't remember about it. That can be the way with all these options.
