FW 1.5 White Balance Bug

Haven't seen this one mentioned and maybe I'm the only one that's noticed the issue I will describe:

When shooting with the M Mount and have Focus Assist on and Enlarge All on to focus, more times than not, when I push the shutter button half way down to get ready to shoot the White Balance will be way off, like a serious purple tint. If I release the shutter button and then reactivate it the White Balance corrects itself and properly sees the scene.

Anyone else see this happening?

I have had the same issue. The file itself shows the proper white balance, but the screen has a strong magenta tint. If you half-depress the shutter to frame your shot and the EVF shows the magenta tint, release the shutter and half-depress it again. It should go away.

+1, I have the same thing after FW upgrade :(

Seems like Ricoh is aware of this issue as they have just solved a similar problem for Ricoh CX6 in new firmware. See quote below.

Should we get it soon in 1.51? ;)

Ow... I see this thread too late. So, I am not alone and my GXR-M is not defective. I actually posted a topic:

http://www.ricohforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=8652

By the way: in my case it's not a "more often than not" situation: when I set the camera to Enlarge All, the image is *always* purple after the next half press. I'm glad to know that this seems to be a bug and not a broken sensor. I got flashbacks to the LOADS of broken Canon Powershot A80's, of which the warranty only expired half a year ago... Canon instituted an 8 year replacement plan and I was having visions of GXR-M modules breaking by the cartloads :X

While I'm glad it's "just" a bug, it's an annoying one. This SHOULD have been caught in testing. I encountered it in the first minute after updating... the only reason for me to update was the addition of "Save RAW only"... and to be honest, now I want to go back to firmware 1.44 for the time being, but I am afraid to flash it... not all camera's (or computer BIOSes) support downgrading. They block it, or it's not guaranteed to work.

I have submitted this to Ricoh Netherlands (in English, through their global site). I'll submit this problem again to the .jp-link above.

We're about to months along after this bug was first encountered, and there's still no new firmware. To be honest, that's the most annoying thing. This should have been hotfixed in the beginning of April already. (But still... we can be glad that Ricoh still adds major new functions to the GXR after 2,5 years! Cannot be said of most other manufacturers.)

Hi Katsunami, I also submitted this bug report to them soon after I updated to FW 1.5, that was sometime in March. Ricoh responded the next day that they know of this issue already and working on it. I was also asking myself when and if this will be solved, so 3 days ago I send an reminder email to Ricoh Germany to which they replied

"The problem has been noted and is still under investigation."

They did not even mention they were working on it (just investigating? ) so I don't know what to say except I expected this bug to be solved very quickly, but...

One person got a response from Ricoh's helpdesk to reflash firmware 1.44, to resolve a problem he had with a bug in 1.50 (unrelated to this bug). See this topic, posted earlier:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=41010184

If the helpdesk provides a link to the older firmware and requests the user to reflash it, then I assume it's safe to do so. Therefore I'll be returning to 1.44 for now. I find this problem much more annoying than having the RAW-only option is an advantage.

By the way: please note that you will probably never, ever mail "Ricoh".

In the past, I've worked for the Canon, Nikon, and HP hel(l/p)desks (You have to get some money when studying....), and they are *NOT* Canon, Nikon, or HP. They are just Random Helpdesk Provider Company X, where C/N/H outsource their helpdesk business. I don't think it will be different with any other company.

So, you send an e-mail, and some employee of Random Helpdesk Provider Company X receives it.

They read it like this:
"Purple tint... pressing shutter button first time after taking picture... GXR-M 1.50...."

"Ah, that's issue 1375."

*File e-mail on issue 1375*

Answer:
"Dear customer, this problem is known to Ricoh. It is under investigation."

When you ask them: "When is a new firmware forthcoming?" you get this:
"Dear customer, please check our website <link> for new firmwares."

The helpdesk DOES NOT KNOW. They will NEVER KNOW about a new firmware before it actually appears on the site. It's like that with Canon, Nikon, HP... and I'll bet my skin on it that it's the same with Ricoh.

So we just have to wait.
