I already have a GRD III and I am thinking of giving away my GX-100 to make room for a newer zoom Ricoh.

I don't have the budget for the GXR. I want a pocketable replacement. Guess the choices are:

  1. GX200
  2. CX4
  3. Keep the GX100 and give him my Nikon P6000

I know the GX has a bigger sensor vs the CX4 has a better LCD. What's the best?
 
I'd keep the GX100 and get the CX4. I'd then use the CX4 and evaluate the situation much later on. Only give away the GX100 if you really feel you'll never use it again.

You may find that you do not like the CX4 (but I doubt that) and give that away instead.

Just a thought on how I'd probably approach it - not very generous the the other photog I know! :oops:
Maybe either way give away the Nikon! - if you arn't using it :?

I wonder why you'd prefer the GX100 to the GX200 and don't rate the CX4.

True, I rarely use the P6000, because it doesn't hold a charge especially compared to the Ricohs. But it does take sharp contrasty and vibrant daylight pictures and is the only camera I own that will do time lapse video.

So here I still sit with the two cameras before me. There's not a lot between them.

Nikon Pros: Like the Ricoh, it's also aimed at the prosumer market and being two years the Ricoh's junior so it's got a little better resolution and a couple more stops of ISO. 400 ISO is more useable. I personally think the Nikon takes slightly better daylight photos, though indoor use is likewise lackluster. The Nikon has a proper optical viewfinder. The Nikon theoretically has GPS and LAN connection though I never managed to tag any of my photos or use the LAN feature. The most useful unique feature is the time lapse movie feature. Nikon build quality in on par with the Ricoh and the extended lens doesn't rattle about. The Nikon's probably worth a few dollars (but not much) more than the Ricoh on the second hand market.

Nikon Cons: The Nikon's battery life is poor. The battery drains alarmingly fast when shot, within days in the camera and in a week or so even when not in the camera. The Ricoh is simply excellent in this regards. The Ricoh's lens is wider and marginally faster at all zoom levels (though the Nikon's a bit better with noise).

On balance and considering I just bought the very similar GX200, I should logically have off-loaded the GX100, but yet it's the Nikon that's all packed up and about to ship. My deciding reasons aren't rational. First, the Nikon looks different from the Ricoh and is obviously a separate purchase. I don't think my wife has figured out that all the Ricohs I own aren't more than one or two cameras. :lol: Finally, I've reached that point where I have not only drunk the Kool-Aid but I'm beginning to like the taste. I suppose it's time to admit that I'm collecting digital Ricoh cameras and go looking for the last remaining ones.

PS/ A photographer friend has the CX4 and while it lacks manual control, it seems to take lovely pictures.
