The first one is perfect! Great balance between the light and shadow. The only thing that distracts me a bit is the left/bottom corner. I would either clone or crop it out

The second picture seems to be a bit too overexposed. But I understand it was difficult shot because of strong contrast between the light and shadow. In any case, the first one is definitely a winner.

I too think that #1 is a real winner!
The sharpness and the preservation of the detail on the window glass and the repetition of the stair handrail higher up make it for me...very atmospheric!

I agree with the other posters, #1 is the winner, very moody feel and I like the graphic composition.

Photo #1 is rather good, perhaps you could start a new thread of "staircases" similar to "doors"
