Took these photographs at Portland's Lan Su Chinese Garden in honor of Chinese New Year's Day. This used to be the site of a parking garage. The land was donated by Northwest Natural Gas to form this garden. It occupies an entire city block in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon. Completed in 2000, this is considered to be the most authentic Chinese garden outside of China. Most of the materials used to build the garden, including more than 500 tons of rock, came from China. Sixty-five artisans from Suzhou lived in Portland, OR for 10 months while they assembled and completed the structures. It's intended to be a window into 16th century China, and you're at the home and private garden of a wealthy family. The ideal life was to be a hermit in the mountains, surrounded by nature. Since city life provided more comforts and pleasure, nature was brought to them - on a smaller scale.
