Caplio R6 inaccurate autofocus

tonyp

New Member
Hi - wanted to ask for some help with my Caplio R6, about 4 years old. The autofocus seems to be always a bit off. I'm not a camera fanatic but I'm aware of the basic operation (focus modes, half-press, etc). The autofocus activates and acquires a lock normally, but the result is consistently a little out-of-focus. It's been this way since it was new, but I notice it more since we bought a floor model Nikon point-and-shoot on a recent trip. Pictures taken with the lower MP-count Nikon (5 vs. 7) come out much more crisp, in all conditions. Is there anything I can do short of replacing the camera?

Hi tonyp and welcome here! I'm sorry to hear about your problem. Could you please post a full sized/unedited photo so we can examine your problem? It sounds like there is something wrong with your lens? Unfortunately, your camera is already out of the warranty and I'm afraid, the price of repair might be only slightly lower than the price of new camera (one year old CX3 model)? And I really doubt there is something you could do to improve the R6 focus accuracy.

Hi Pavel - thanks for the response! I will post an example photo tomorrow. I am traveling today & don't have the camera with me.

OK sorry for the delay. Here are two photos comparing the Caplio R6 with a Coolpix L11. I made the conditions as identical as possible, focusing on the same area (the lower third of the advertisement) and setting on a solid surface with a time delay, to prevent any shaking. I tried a few different focus settings on the Caplio but nothing helped. Maybe it's just a difference in the sensor and electronics?

Oops forgot the attachments.

Coolpix first:

Now the Caplio:

Might be weird sample variation if it is always the top-left and bottom-right corner which comes out soft. I guess that it is out of warranty? Is it one or two year for the R-series?
I know that the model is more than 2 year old but it depends on when it was bought. Shame that Ricoh still haven't sorted the mess out of their quality control for the R/CX models.
That's is just another reason for me to keep away from that series. I'm not very interested in super-zooms and neither the hassle of going through/return a couple units before finding one with a decent copy of the zoom.
