But which way should be 'up'?

A silly thought but...when looking vertically down, which way become the right way up?

I thought it would be obvious; i.e. the way the scene looked when I took the photograph...which was SP2...but now I am not so sure!
Any thoughts? :D

They all look good.Congratulations, you have passed the HCB composition test. (Apparently that's what he used to do when handed a picture and asked for his opinion) Obviously, here some credit should go to the architect!
I don't remember where I read the HCB method-but I tried it on the pictures that I enjoyed, and it works. The challenge is to develop ability of abstraction, so you can see the things "within the frame" as elements of composition. So if you do it with a portrait, or a street scene it won't make much sense at first- people upside down etc,but once your eyes see them as shapes, forms, and abstract elements you can further develop compositional skills. or so they say.

I love this kind of exercise!
My intellect says 2 or 3, and definitely not 4, but my feeling says 4.
2 has the most natural direction of light. 3 has the strongest foundation from an abstract point of view. But 4 just feels weird and exciting.

For me the SP1 is the physically right orientation. The reason is the direction of view is not perfectly vertical but slightly out of axis so the horizon becomes obvious as perpendicular to the direction of this axis deviation (like in an airplane). That is what my brain says. However, the SP1 shot is so boring and ordinary in comparison with the remaining ones because it fulfils the mental expectations. ;) I join tommy that the SP4 is the best for its effect of confusion.

Rondo, thanks for the compliment regarding the HCB test! :)
I like the idea of treating a picture as an abstract 'canvas' but for many subjects the brain resists the instruction to 'see' any image that is not the 'proper way up...

Today, I have decided that number 3 is the best...it certainly seems the most stable as tommy suggested....
And tomorrow? Perhaps I will take a chance and go with number 4! ;)

Maybe I print it out and try it on the wall, different ways up each week... :D
