bumblebee

This "little" guy landed yesterday on our window sill. We have very cold and rainy weather recently. I guess he was seriously frozen.

I took several photos with GRDIII and GXR A12 + GT1. As I expected, It was much easier keep this guy in focus with GRD (due its smaller sensor with higher DoF). GRDIII lens also appears to be more contrast. Of course, A12 allows to use much higher ISO. As you can imagine, black bumblebee on the white background gave a hard time to camera exposure system. It was required to go higher with exposure compensation (up to +1EV). Focused manually, but in the end I simply moved the camera up/down instead of refocusing each shot. Also, it's a very good idea to use continuous mode! It's very hard to keep the things in focus (especially with A12) if you are too close to the photographed subject. Due to small DoF caused by ASPC sensor, even few millimeters here or there matter. So it's much easier to use Continuous mode and then select the sharpest photo.

Hi Pavel,
A lot of hard work has gone into these lovely photos ;) . Thanks for the comparison between the two cameras and the associated explanations.

Wow! I don't know that A12+GT1 can be this good on macro, it's worth your effort and hard focusing. Thanks for sharing this excellent shot. :)

the one looking down on the bees back is my fave. I often focus by moving the camera too! havent done much macro with the 200 I'll need to look around
