Hi There!

My name is Sagar and I am based in US. After starting my photography fad with modest canon s50 eventually I "upgraded" to DSLR of whatever make. Later to find out this so called upgrade has actually stopped my photography hobby completely. May be I am too lazy but I got fed up of carrying such a weight every ever and the dslr finally took a permanent place on the shelf.

Finally after lot of courage, I have decided to sell off my dslr and go for a single compact camera which I can always carry with me and still give me complete control and pleasure of taking photographs.

Now I am catch up between Canon G10 vs Ricoh GX/GRD siblings. After reading all the reviews and comparisons between these my heart tells me to go for Ricoh while logic tells to me go for tested canon.

...finally I am joining here hoping to listen to my heart and go for Ricoh :)

Hi Sagar and welcome here! Ricoh cameras are definitely not for everyone. Their JPEG output is noisy or smeared by too strong noise reduction. But they are equipped with incredible lenses and if you spend some time with processing DNG output, you can get some excellent results. G10 may deliver cleaner JPEGs but in my humble opinion, there is not the same feel (not to mention the lens quality). And it's definitely bigger/heavier camera with not so easy to use interface. The only other pocketable camera with similarly good lens as GRD/GX is DP1/2. But as any new camera (in terms of new technology achievements), it has its own problems.

I personally replaced DSLR with GRD and I really don't miss it. Actually, I still have the DSLR lying on the bookshelf, but I did not touch it over a year or so. Last year, just before Photokina, I was requested to write a small article about my reasons for using Ricoh cameras. Well, I'm a bit ashamed to post the link here, because there were done some "last minute" editor's changes that are not entirely my words (like title professional photographer ;) But here we go...

Thanks for the warm welcome and sharing some insightful information.

I am indeed more or less decided to go with Ricoh mostly GRD II. My only worry of Richo releasing GRD III too soon after I buy GRD III. Wish I could get a used GRD II so I can upgrade to GRD III what its released later this year

Maybe you can search for cheaper (but still great and in some aspects better) GRDI and wait for GRDIII? I believe it's only 5-6 months of waiting. It's nothing compared to eternity ;)

Thanks Tim. I think I am thinking on those lines and mostly be going for GX200 instead of GRD route. This way in case ricoh announces GRD III, my purchase is safe ;)

I checked couple of forums/threads like dpreview etc and looks like high level of noise is the only real concern for GX200 when compared against Canon G10/9. Can any one tell me upto what ISO GX200 images can be considered as viewable for color and bw? I have seen samples and images posted around the net but I would like to know what's the max ISO you generally use on your GRD/GX camer?

Great! Don't forget to post some photos then! Feel free to ask if you have some questions.

As for your previous question regarding the ISO, I think the ISO400 is the maximum reasonable value for color photos and ISO800 for B&W. But still, if you can get the best results, you will have to use RAW. GX200 JPEG is way too smeared even at ISO100.
