hi there,

Yesterday I decided to join the Ricoh user base and bought a used GX200 (don't have it yet, but it can only be a matter of days).

I used to be a Minolta shooter for years, but with selling their SLR division to Sony and the horrible experience with Sony service trying to fix my Minolta gear, I dumped my beloved camera and lenses and went Nikon. First a D200 now a D700 with lots of mostly manual lenses.
My focus currently lies on improving my portraiture, with a small studio at home. Second is doing reportages about the events our medieval group arranges and third, I have a few nice tele lenses that I use for wildlife (even have a camouflage tent and all that).

Why Ricoh? Well I was in Hamburg during last weekend and lugged my D700 + Zeiss 35mm + 24mm + 180/4 APO + GPS around. The results are fantastic, but in the afternoon, I was already tired of using it and took almost no photographs. So I decided that I need something smaller for vacations mostly, but also to motivate me to take more pictures, as the D700 stays at home way too often. I read a lot on fora, reviews and photo sites and it was pretty clear that there is no equivalent to a professional 35mm compact. Reading up on the Sigma DPxx cameras, mostly because I thought about getting a fixed focal length cam (love 35mm fixed lenses), the DP2 was tempting. But there where so many negative comments in terms of usability that I passed. If there where a 40mm lens attachment for the GRDIII I would have went that route, but I decided that I want convenience when on tour, so the zoom it is, and cheap it is, too. If it is really as mint as the seller says, I will be pleased, as it still has warranty left.

I also bought a TC-1 + HA-2 + LC-1 + Metz 20 C-2 and a Russian revolving viewfinder for 35mm and 135mm use
maybe I also get the 19mm attachment and an independent GPS Phototracker, love that feature on the D700.

Next steps are to find a suitable bag (maybe my KATA is ok already), a nice neck strap and get a small Canon Selphy for these 10x15cm prints at home. Hopefully it gives me the untroubled approach of old back :)

good to be here, I guess ;)

servus!

no, my name is Bernhard, but if you want, you can call me Leopold

I already spam the board with questions, but I think I will post more answers and pictures than questions soon :geek:

welcome, and I hope you enjoy your camera! I got the gx200 and I love it. I am taking so much more now that I have a small camera that is like a 35mm rangefinder. I used to use an old Leica IIIf, then like you moved to a big SLR, but I love the spontaneity for great shots. I keep the ISO low and the quality is excellent

kanzir,
nice to meet another 'austrian' on here!
I too was a Minolta fan, but never really moved out of their analogue world, sticking with my trusty SRT101 and XD7, both of which I still own.
I moved 'up' to a GR1v which is basicly an analogue version of the GRD series which more or less made my bulky SLR kit redundant over night...at present I use a GX100 which I think is a brillant 'always in the pocket' machine :D

I guess as a medieval man you will be a fan of the Rüstkammer in the Neuburg? A crazy place with suits of armout to fit even the smallest and the fattest...but all works of art never-the less! ;)
Looking forward to seeing some of your GX200 images!
Andy

actually, I know the Rüstkammer well, I have currently a copy of one of the pieces made to fit me :)
