A neophyte Ricoh fan with a problem with a 519

My name is George and I live in Chester Springs, PA. I started collecting cameras about a year ago. I had the good fortune to be able to buy a Ricoh 500G and that quickly convinced me that Ricoh should be among the companies I have targeted for my collection. My principal interest is in early eye-level SLR's, but I will always be open to a good range finder. I currently own the 500G, a 519, and an XR-2.

The 519 is in pristine condition and it and its case do not have any signs of use. All of the functions were working perfectly until I loaded it last night. I'm not certain what happened (I was following the instructions), but the rewind crank no longer had any resistance. It simply moves back and forth and does not seem to be connected to any kind of spring. It also seems to be loose, as if the screw holding it to the camera were loose. I hope that this is something that can be repaired at home by my son and I (if necessary we could ask one of my son's friends - a mechanical genius - to help). Does anyone have ideas, any help will be gratefully received. I am also going to post this on the problems page to see if anyone can help. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Best regards, George

Hi George,
I don't know if your camera is similar to the XR10 I had, but there is a small 'reset button' somewhere (on the base?) which clicks the rewind mechanism back into operation.

Have a look at this manual http://www.butkus.org/chinon/ricoh/xr-2s/xr-2s.htm
It might be something to do with the Film Rewind Release Button (#40 on the diagram)

The manual says:

UNLOADING FILM

After the last picture on the roll of film has been taken, rewind the film and unload your camera.

1. Press Film Rewind Release Button (40) (Fig. 28).
2. Lift up Film Rewind Crank (2) and turn it clockwise until Film Rewind Release Button (40) stops revolving and you feel the film tension released (Fig. 29). This indicates that the film has been completely rewound into the cartridge.

3. Open Back Cover (44) by pulling up Film Rewind Knob (1).

4. Remove the film cartridge and have the film processed as soon as possible.

Good luck

EDITED TO ADD: I now see your problem is with the 519 not the XR2. Hopefully the same procedure will work for that too. The Ricoh manuals main page is here:http://www.butkus.org/chinon/ricoh.htm though I don't see a '519' listed. The nearest thing may be a Sears 500 which is similar or identical to the Ricoh CR5. This uses the same rewind release mechanism.

Dear Rog:

Thanks for taking the time to respond and, moreover, for taking the time to try and find an answer. The problem turned out to be that the screw that attaches the rewind lever to the base of the back was loose. It was a valuable experience and you helped me know more about my camera. Thanks and Best regards, George
